A battery is good for a certain number of discharge/recharge cycles so using it with power cord connected prolongs the life of it,imo. I have a 2 yr old laptop that I use mainly on power. I do unplug and use on battery occasionally about every 6-8 weeks.Best not to drop below 30-40% .

Batteries and chargers now are smarter than you thought. They will stop charging when batteries are 100% full and automatically switch to AC when plugged.
You don't need to discharge battery of your machine. Batteries all have a number of charging cycles therefore keep them at lower cycles is much better than charge them everyday. I did post my observations around Christmas 2016.
