Hi

i have HP 15s-fq1002na that I bought in 2021.

Recently I am getting a battery error which says that I am using non HP battery and my laptop shuts down immediately if it is not connected to charger. I haven't made any changes to my laptop or battery and I am using original HP charger.

Is there any way to fix this error or do I need to replace the battery?error.jpg

@dubub,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

It sounds like your laptop is experiencing battery-related issues, which can sometimes happen as the battery ages. Let’s troubleshoot and determine whether the battery needs to be replaced or if it’s something that can be fixed.

1. Verify the Battery's Condition Using HP Diagnostics:

HP laptops have built-in diagnostics to test the battery:

  1. Turn off your laptop.
  2. Turn it back on and immediately press the Esc key repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.
  3. Press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  4. Select Component Tests > Battery > Run Once.
    • The test will provide a battery status (e.g., “Replace,” “Weak,” or “Good”).

If the battery test suggests a replacement, the battery has likely reached the end of its life.

2. Check the BIOS Settings and Update It:

Sometimes, a BIOS update can fix battery-related errors:

  1. Plug in your charger and ensure the laptop has at least 50% charge (if it holds any charge).
  2. Go to the HP Support website and download the latest BIOS update for your specific model (HP 15s-fq1002na).
  3. Follow the instructions carefully to update the BIOS.

3. Recalibrate the Battery:

Battery calibration can sometimes resolve power management issues:

  1. Charge the laptop to 100%, then let it remain plugged in for 2 additional hours.
  2. Disconnect the charger and use the laptop until it shuts down due to low battery.
  3. Recharge the battery fully without interruption.

This helps recalibrate the battery sensor and may resolve the error message.

4. Why You’re Seeing the "Non-HP Battery" Message:

This error might appear due to:

  • Battery Degradation: The original HP battery might have lost its capacity and is misidentified by the system.
  • Firmware Glitch: Updating the BIOS can address this.
  • Hardware Issue: If the battery or charging circuitry is damaged, the system may misinterpret it as a non-HP component.

5. When to Replace the Battery:

If the diagnostics test or troubleshooting steps indicate a problem, you’ll likely need a replacement. Since your laptop is an HP 15s-fq1002na and still under HP's ecosystem:

  • Purchase a genuine HP replacement battery to avoid compatibility issues:

Hi

Thank you very much for your help. I tried to verify Battery’s condition using HP Diagnostics and it says ‘No Battery Installed The Battery must be installed before the system is started’

Also, when I turn on the laptop I get this message

followed by the non-hp battery detected message

I also did bios update but it hasn’t helped yet.

@dubub,

Thank you for the pictures!

The battery alert almost certainly indicates that your battery is defective. I would replace it with a quality generic battery as I referenced via Amazon-UK.  Given the quality of today's replacement batteries, one can safely ignore HP's warnings about the evils of non-HP batteries.
