HP Pavilion x360 - 14-ba104na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi

Please can you advise on my issue please.

My HP Pavilion x360 - 14-ba104na was working fine till yesterday afternoon, I decided to give it to my son and removed my details and cleared it so he can use his own details. From then, the battery started discharging from 100 to 0 in about 5mn, then when i plugged back in, it recharge to 90% in about 3mn.

The battery cannot be removed and i do not know what to do. I've read online and did the test and also the F2 test that return an error that it need to be replaced. Today my son plugged in and charge to 100%, remove the charger and was doing homework then decided to plugin to avoid dying on him, the weird things is, now plugging in actually take it from 100 to 50%.

The laptop was bought in nov 2018 and out of warranty. however i read the non-removable warranty for battery is 3 years,

So what to do now as this doesn't seems to be a wear and tear or usage issue, but some wrong with the battery,
Any advice what to do?

Thanks in advance.
I just bought last week 2 more 15" hp laptops and if this is what it going to be every 3 years, this is scary.

This is par for the course with a laptop. Batteries last around 3 years at the middle of the bell curve.  This would be true regardless of the manufacturer of the laptop since all laptop batteries are essentially made the same with the same power cells. The brightest minds in the world right now are trying to improve Lithium-ion battery technology but progress has been slow. The battery is not non-removeable. It can be replaced and it is not terribly hard to do. Battery costs maybe $50-80 US.

Warranty on internal "non-removeable" batteries on consumer laptops is one year by default. Longer warranties up to 3 years can be purchased at extra cost. UK may have consumer protection laws which extend this so you want to check with HP in your country to be sure and I do not work or speak for HP.

Post back and we can provide you explicit instructions on battery replacement and link you to a place to buy a replacement battery. Good luck.

Hi

Thank you for your reply.

If I understand correctly, you are saying this behaviour is normal for just a 2 years(not even 3 years) laptop?

The battery completely depleting under 5mn then recharge fully in about 2mn?

Was working fine till i gave it to my son who only install chrome (and adblocker). I also have other hp laptops in the house and none have this issue.

Thanks

Yes its 2.5 years old and the battery can be depleted in that time. They often go out suddenly. Best way to be sure is to run a diagnostic test on the battery.

This shows how:

Run the test and post a screenshot or cut and paste the advanced results which will tell a lot about the state of the battery.

Hi again

Thanks for your reply.

I think though, there is a little misunderstanding. My issue is really not about depletion of the battery over time. I know that's normal.

My question is if the charging and depletion am facing is a malfunction of the battery or some faulty issue? I mean it charges to 100% then depletes in about 2mn, then after plug in, it goes back to 90-100% in a matter of sec or maximum 2mn.

That is my concern. if the battery depleted and recharged normally as the rest of the laptops i have even some more than 10 years its OK by me. Its the phenomena am worry about

Again thank you

What you describe is how a battery behaves when it is at end of life. It does not hold enough power captured in the cells to run very long. In fact, there is very little else it can be other than a nearly dead battery. Batteries are consumable, and require replacement at some point in their life like the tires or windshield wipers on a car.
