Common problems for Battery

One of our HP laptops at school has a 'Battery Not Recognized' issue. The battery works just fine but no icon shows up on the screen, no status is shown to the user about how much charge might be left, diagnostics don't work since the system is ignoring the battery.

Troubleshooting Done to Date:

- Migrated machine to Win 11 Pro from 10 Pro and ran all updates

- Updated BIOS and all available updates shown in HP Support tool

- Removed battery and AC power, power cycled, reinstalled and rebooted

- Replaced battery entirely with a known, good battery from a similar system

- Device Manager > uninstall battery driver and reboot

- Swapped out AC power cords and tried both HP OEM charger and a different USBc charger

Any other ideas that I might try? I'm going to do a full system retore next but feel like I'm running out of options.

Hopefully someone has a workable idea that doesn't involve sending the laptop in for repair.

Hi @CarolinaFriends,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  1. What exact HP laptop model is affected?
  2. Is the issue happening with all batteries, or just certain ones? You mentioned swapping in a known good battery did that one work on another identical machine?
  3. Does the laptop recognize the battery at all in BIOS/UEFI, or is it completely invisible?
  4. Have you checked whether there’s any EC (Embedded Controller) firmware update available for this model? Some battery recognition problems are tied to the EC rather than Windows itself.

Here are a few additional troubleshooting steps you could consider:

  • Perform an Embedded Controller (EC) reset: On many HP laptops, this involves:
    1. Shut down the laptop.
    2. Disconnect AC power
    3. Hold the power button down for 30–60 seconds.
    4. Reconnect power (and battery) and boot. This can sometimes resolve battery recognition issues not fixed by a normal power cycle.
  • Check BIOS/UEFI for battery info: Even if Windows ignores it, sometimes the BIOS can display battery status. If it’s not shown there, it could point to a hardware or EC issue rather than software.
  • HP Battery Health/Firmware Tools: Some HP laptops have specific tools for battery firmware updates via HP Support Assistant or HP Image Assistant. Running these can sometimes restore proper recognition.
  • Full System Restore / OS Reinstallation: As you mentioned, this is a last resort, but if the issue persists even after restoring to factory Windows 11 Pro with all updates, it would further point toward a hardware or EC firmware issue.

I hope this helps.
