Pavilion 15-cw1507sa
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hoping someone might have a quick answer before I start my own lengthy investigation....

The battery on this NEW laptop is flat after a few days, whether in hibernation or shutdown.  It goes flat so fast, I suspect it may not be actually shutting down fully.

1.  Could the use of a USB Wireless mouse dongle be keeping it switched on?  The USB ports do not seem to provide power when the laptop is shutdown, in that they do not charge a phone...

2.  Does selecting the BIOS "Wake on LAN  S3/S4/S5" mean it consumes significant power? The  laptop does not "wake on LAN" when shutdown (S5) though it does wake from hibernation and sleep (S4/S3).  I wouldn't expect to be able to wake a device over Wifi, and the laptop doesn't, but does the Pavilion try and keep Wifi going to allow a wake?

I have read a few other older posts on this issue but not found a relevant answer.  But I apologise in advance if there is one and I missed it!

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

  • Did this happen after a recent window or software update?
  • Did you try another charger?
  • Does the notebook shut down immediately (right after you unplug the charger)?

To get the answer to this question, If Wake on LAN is not working, the problem might be your BIOS settings.

While you respond to that, let's try these steps:

Hard Reset: Follow steps from the link: https://hp.care/2GnkMa8. (do not skip any troubleshooting steps even if you feel steps are repeating)

BIOS default:

  1. Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
  2. Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.
  3. On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings.
  4. Press F10 to Save and Exit.
  5. Use the arrow keys to select Yes, then press Enter when asked Exit Saving Changes?
  6. Follow the prompts to restart your computer. If the issue persists, follow next steps.

Run hardware diagnostics test on battery and Charger:

Use the following steps to open the Component Tests menu.

  1. Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
  2. Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.
  3. On the main menu, click Component Tests.
  4. The Component Tests menu displays. Your Component Tests menu might be different, depending on the components installed on your computer.
  5. To run both tests simultaneously, in the Component Tests menu, click Power Source, and then click Run once. Each component can also be tested individually.

AC Adapter Test:

The AC Adapter test provides an interactive test to determine if the AC power adapter is functioning properly. A good battery is required for this test. Before running the AC Adapter Test, HP recommends verifying that your computer can receive power by connecting a known working AC adapter.

Follow these steps to perform the AC Adapter Test.

  • In the Component Tests menu, click Power, and then click an AC Adapter Test.
  • Click Run once.
  • The AC Adapter Test begins.
  • When the test is complete, the results are displayed on the screen.

Battery Test:

Follow these steps to perform the Battery Test:

  1. In the Component Tests menu, click Power, and then click Battery.
  2. Click Run once. The Battery Test begins.
  3. When the battery test is complete, the results are displayed on the screen. For additional battery information, click Battery Details.

If the test passes, continue with these steps:

1. Go to Start, search for Device Manager, and open this result.

2. Expand batteries.

3. Right-click on the ACPI option (usually the 2nd option) and select delete or uninstall. Follow the prompts.

4. Shut down the computer.

5. Disconnect the charger.

6. Remove the battery.

7. Hold down the power button for 1 minute.

8. Insert the battery only.

9. Attempt to turn the battery on.

Thanks   for your response.

I guess you have sent me a standard checklist: i don't think it really addresses my issue but I have done all that I can and all tests OK.  Now I am in process of re-running my measurements to see if things are different.  two comments first:

1.  I don't have a "known good battery" as the battery is internal, but I don't think it is a charger problem.

2.  If I disable the the ACPI option, I can't see battery charge level, which makes things difficult... should I really go ahead and uninstall it?  How will I read the battery - I don't want to have to wait several days to see if it has gone flat.

Just for interest: these are the issues I found BEFORE following your reset and testing list.

1. Power drain in Hibernate - ACPI power state S4 (Wake On LAN disabled in BIOS)
The battery drains significantly: 15-20% per day compared to virtually no drain if the laptop is shutdown. This is not what I would expect in hibernate, I would expect the same drain as in shutdown, I thought hibernate is "soft off" except that state of OS and Programs is saved to disk. BTW this is lower than sleep, which I measured at 30%/day, I don't have a problem with sleep draining the battery - as expected.
But why does the battery drain so quickly in hibernate? A few days and it is flat!
2. Power drain in shutdown (ACPI S5) if Wake On LAN is enabled in BIOS
The battery drains significantly: similar to hibernate 15-20% per day. However, as with my other PC's, I cannot wake the laptop over LAN like I can from Hibernate or Sleep. So what is the laptop doing to consume all that power when it is shutdown? It would seem to make the BIOS setting for WOL useless, since so much power is drained even if the machine is shut down - and I can't physically remove the battery. Is this behaviour expected?

I will update if needed once I have re-run the measurements.

Can anyone else offer any advice or information on this issue?

It seems in the UK, HP does not offer any support and has referred me back to the store I bought it from.  ☹️☹️

i have asked the question, but I fear the retailer is not going to be able to answer this...

Thank you for posting back.

To get the answer to this question, the average laptop battery is good for around (appx) 400 recharges cycles. After that, it starts to lose its capacity to hold a charge. This is about one and a half to three years of battery life for the average user. As the rechargeable battery begins to fail, the running time of the battery begins to decline.
