My HP Envy 13" laptop (13-ah0051wm) suddenly stopped recognizing the battery. It worked fine up until 2 days ago, then without warning the compute will not recognize the battery, and dies immediately if not plugged into AC power. Is this a battery issue or a hardware/driver issue? I don't want to buy another battery only to find out it's a more complicated problem. My experience with batteries is that they die slowly over time, not suddenly. Windows 10 64-bit.
Symptoms
- No battery icon in Windows
- powercfg /batteryreport returns "no batteries are currently installed" and shows a Battery changed timestamp 2 days ago (attached... no batteries were changed in real life)
- Battery not detected in BIOS component test, showing Logic State Not Available (FF), Charge State - Not Available for both Primary/Secondary.
- Device Manager shows no problems with ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery
- HP Hardware Diagnostics 1.8.3.0 Battery Check shows Primary - Not installed
- AC Power works great.
I've tried:
- Upgrading drivers via HP Software Update (nothing to upgrade)
- Disabling/reenabling both Microsoft AC Adapter and ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery devices in Device Manager
- Uninstalling ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery in Device Manager and Scanning for New Hardware (found immediately)
- Removing back of laptop, unplugging/reattaching battery cable
- Unplugging battery, hard reset CMOS / capacitors for 15 sec with no power, replugging battery.
Laptop is 13-ah0051wm. Battery is L08496-855.

As you have already tried all the steps, this could be a hardware issue with the battery and may require repair.
