My battery is swelling, and I find it hard to believe a battery should swell like this after only 2.5 years, particularly as the laptop is usually attached to the mains charger, which *should* prevent over-charging and reduce degradation.

How can I get a replacement for what seems like a faulty battery?

I had the same problem, my battery swelled so badly that I couldn't close my laptop without damaging the screen and the touchpad became unusable. It is insane to think that Hp can say that such drastic battery swelling is normal after regular usage. What is even worse is how they treat their customers after their warranty has expired. I submitted a case request and had to wait for two days for them to send me an email that was copied and pasted, on the email itself it was signed "Sincerely, Agent Name".

My advice if your product is out of warranty is just to avoid hp. Order the battery you need off of Amazon or eBay, I have also been recommended to use Partsurfer from others in the community. Just make sure you get what you paid for load-up bios and check the battery has 0 cycles.

If your product is under warranty I guess try to get a new battery from hp.

Welcome to the HP Community.

If your computer is still in Warranty (perhaps having purchased an extended contract?),

Contact HP and submit a case for Warranty Repair.

We do not generally get in the way of what people believe.

We can help with the practical side:

What to do and how to replace the failed battery so it does not damage your computer.

Things that are the Battery

All batteries die, some do so quietly and some first inflate and then fail.

===============================================

"Fat" Battery / Bloated Battery / Swollen Battery – Sealed / Internal Battery

  • Swollen battery might be hiding OR there might be evidence that the battery has inflated.  For example, notebook case warps or won't close, touch-pad stops working, “odd” bulging near the keyboard.

  • If the battery is in a swollen or bloated condition, the battery must be removed from the computer and replaced.  There are no other remedies, tests, or useful options.

Warranty Check – Contact HP

If the battery is failing (or has failed) and the computer is still in Warranty, contact HP Technical Support.

The faster option is to purchase a compatible battery and replace the battery that has failed.

Find / Check for parts at PartSurfer / HP Parts Store

Reference:  HP Notebook PCs - Ordering HP Certified Replacement Parts

PartSurfer might be able to tell you exactly which parts came with your device.

Open PartSurfer

  • Select your Country
  • Enter the device Product Number , Serial Number, or Part Number in the Quick Search box
  • HINT: To see a system-specific list, replace the Product Number with your device Serial Number
  • Items accompanied by a tiny box in the Add-to-Cart column are available for purchase

Parts marked as "n/a" (or are missing from the list) are not available from HP.

Parts marked as available for purchase might be available > CHECK:  HP Parts Store

OR

When HP does not provide the part for retail purchase,

Use your search engine to find a compatible part number replacement at your favorite online store.
