Hello,
The location to the right of the trackpad is bulging up significantly which is where the battery is located, so I assume the issue is with a swollen battery. My warranty has expired. Is it advisable to replace the battery? I also read that it is possible to run laptops without the internal battery through AC power. Could I run this laptop without the internal battery? Any help would be appreciated. I've attached a photo.

Any battery bulging like that poses a risk. If it is removable, take it out. Most laptops will run without a battery but there are a few that do not, just try it and see. I would also check to see if this battery is covered under any of the recalls that HP has done on laptop batteries even if they are beyond warranty.

Hi,
You can remove the battery and the notebook will run without a battery. You could also replace it.
On page 35 of the service manual you can see the steps to replace the battery:
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05260118
The part number for the battery is 853294-855 and you could try an online search with the part number to find an original or compatible battery.
I have flagged your post, so someone might step in and help from the HP support team.
Hope it helps,
David

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).
