Common problems for Battery
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about: Battery Reports, Hold a charge, Test and Calibrating Battery . Check out this link: Is your notebook plugged in and not charging?

15-BS015DXS
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

First some background: The battery is original and it is about 4 years old.  II will not hold a charge for very long, about 10-15 minutes before it shuts down, however it fully recharges after plugging it back in. A few weeks prior to this incident I did a battery check on the computer using an independent app it said the battery was OK.

About 2 days ago my computer froze up and the power button would not shut it down.  I unplugged the power cord to put it to sleep as I felt I had no other options.  The power-down took longer than usual, but it finally went to sleep. I then plugged it back in and used the power button to turn it back on.  While the boot-up did take a little longer than usual, it did come back up.  I then used the computer for about 2 hours before I put it in to hibernate for the night.  Before the shutdown, I noted that it was a 23% charged.  I powered it up the next day and it was still at 23% and it has stayed that way for 2 days. I also used the HP battery checker and it said it needed to be replaced.

My question is 2- fold: first how/why did a computer freeze (which I believe is a software issue) cause the battery problem.?Second is there a way I can tell if any other hardware problems occurred?  I ask this because while it will only cost around $100-$150 to replace the battery, if there are other problems I would be better off replacing the computer.

Any help with this issue would be appreciated.

@ScubaJoe1313 The best way to identify hardware malfunctions on the device is to run an extensive hardware test instead of the battery check you've done that's limited to checking the battery alone, that said, here's how you can get started:

Install the latest version of the HP Hardware diagnostics (UEFI) on your device using this link: Click here for details

  • Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
  • Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.
  • On the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu, click System Tests.
  • Click Extensive Test.
  • Click Run once, or Loop until error.
  • While the test is running, the time remaining and test result for each component display on the screen.

If a component fails a test, write down the failure ID (24-digit code) for when you respond back to us.

As for the battery failure, you may order the replacement parts on the HP Parts Store, If you've already looked for it and couldn't find it on the HP Parts Store, you may want to get it locally at the online store such as Amazon or eBay, etc...as the part numbers are universal.

TYVM for your guidance.

After running the complete test and finding that the other components were running fine, I was quite relieved.

Now I can buy a battery with confidence knowing that I don't need a new laptop.  WHEW!!!
