Dear All

 

I have a very old Compaq presario CQ61 which has an Intel T3400 pentium dual core CPU installed

 

I was wondering if i can upgrade this oldie to a Intel Core 2 duo and if possible which cpu would you guys recommend

Hi:

 

Your notebook most likely has the Intel GL40 chipset, which can supposedly only run processors with the 667 MHz FSB.

If you want to experiment, looking at the list of Merom processors with 667 MHz FSB's, the fastest one would be the T5750.

Here is the link to the service manual for your notebook.  The list of supported processors for that model series is listed on page 1-1.

You have the best supported 667 Mhz processor that HP wanted to include for that motherboard.

 

The other ones you see that are better than the T3400, all run at either 800 or 1066 MHz, which the GL40 chipset can't handle, according to Intel.

 

Now, I see conflicting info out there...these folks say the GL40 can run processors with 800 MHz FSB's

So if that is the case, and you want to go strictly by what is listed in the manual, then you can experiment with the T6600.
