HP Notebook - 15-f272wm (ENERGY STAR)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I recently got this unopen notebook laptop, and when I plugged it in, I saw that the battery was not charging. So, I let everything update but still had the same issue. I decided that it must be the battery (even though it had never been used) and bought a new one, but the battery still won't charge.

I downloaded HP Assistant, but since the OS is Win10, there's not much help it can offer. As far as I can tell all the drivers are updated, and with a new battery in place, I am at a lost as to what the problem could be.

Thanks in advance!

Hi @Oswald-C ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP Notebook - 15-f272wm is not charging the battery even after replacing it with a new one, there may be an issue with the charging system rather than the battery itself. Here are some troubleshooting steps to help identify and resolve the problem:

1. Check the Charger and Power Adapter

  • Ensure the charger is working properly. Try a different, compatible charger to rule out any issues with the power adapter.
  • Inspect the power port for dust or debris that might interfere with proper charging.

2. Perform a Hard Reset

  1. Shut down the laptop and disconnect the charger.
  2. Remove the battery from the laptop.
  3. Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds to discharge any residual power.
  4. Reinsert the battery, connect the charger, and power on the laptop.

3. Update the BIOS

Outdated BIOS firmware can sometimes cause charging issues.

  1. Go to the HP Support website and find the BIOS update for your model.
  2. Follow the instructions to install the update.

4. Run Battery Diagnostics  HP PCs - Testing for hardware failures

  1. Turn off the laptop.
  2. Power it on and immediately press the F2 key to enter the HP Hardware Diagnostics.
  3. Navigate to the "Component Tests" and select the "Battery" test.
  4. Follow the instructions to check the battery's health.

5. Check Battery Connection

Ensure the battery is securely connected to the laptop. If the connection is loose, the battery may not charge correctly.

6. Test the Laptop Without the Battery

  1. Remove the battery and connect the charger.
  2. Power on the laptop. If the laptop works without the battery but not when the battery is inserted, the charging circuit may be faulty.

7. Reset the Battery Driver

  1. Open the Device Manager by pressing Win + X and selecting it from the menu.
  2. Expand the "Batteries" section.
  3. Right-click on both the Microsoft AC Adapter and Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery drivers and choose Uninstall device.
  4. Restart the laptop. Windows will automatically reinstall the drivers.
