My left hinge just broke, also. I bought this computer around Christmas in 2016. I never use it as a tablet, and have never dropped it. In fact, it's used mainly like a desktop so I just close the lid at the end of the day and open it in the morning. On this morning I heard a crunching sound and a snap then saw that the bottom left of the screen had seperated and the keyboard didn't work. I tweaked the screen a little trying to get it back together and the keyboard came back to life.
I've owned maybe half a dozen HP computers over the years (my wife even worked for HP until her retirement) and I've never had a problem. It seems that HP is not addressing this issue which is clearly a Quality Control problem. If it's not addressed with a recall I may have to find a diffrent brand in the future.

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).
If you are unfamiliar with how the Community's private message capability works, you can learn about that here.
