Hello,

I have HP ENVY 15-J011DX, The installed CPU "Intel i5-3230M" I want to upgrade the CPU to Quad Core i7 CPU, I checked the compatible list on Maintenance and Service Guide for ENVY 15 laptops, below the link. page #2, 77 and 88.

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03733656.pdf

I found that here is no 3rd generation Quad core CPU for my laptop,

My laptop chipset is intel HM77 Express chipset, which means only 3rd gen i3, i5 and i7 CPU's compatible with this chipset.

I found 3rd gen. intel i7 CPU's in the local market i.e. i7-3632QM, and have the same socket size and specs as well as the TDP, Now which of the i7 CPU's in the below link can be upgraded on my laptop without need to replace the mainboard or Power adapter,

Thanks
Anass

The simple direct answer is that if it is not listed in the Service Manual as a processor that HP says is compatible, not just with your model but the motherboard variation in your model, it will not work. Beyond that everything is guesswork and speculation.

Thanks for your reply,

I doesn't make sense, why HP force us to use only certain CPU's, this mean HP forces me indirectly to buy a new laptop, I'm sure it's HP BIOS configuration to limit CPU's models, i7-3632QM is the same socket and power compared with current CPU installed,

Again thanks for your reply

All hardware has compatibility limits. I don't see how anyone is forcing anything. You are certainly free to try any CPU you wish and it "might" work. I have definitely seen it happen, but more often by far it does not. It is particularly unlikely you can put a Quad Core into a motherboard only designed for Dual Cores. In that case there are hardware issues, not necessarily BIOS.

thank a lot for your reply,

I will check that processor and let you know the result,

Hello,

I want to add some cases,

The below HP products have HM77 Chipset and designed to operates with i7-3632QM Quad-Core CPU.

http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03511047

http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03619360

http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03619732

http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03743547

So, I think its possible to upgrade the CPU in my laptop to i7-3632QM without changing the mainboard or the power adapter.

What do you think,

Thanks.

Give it a shot and let us know. I will point out those models list that quad core processor as compatible in the manual and yours does not. The chipset is not the whole story. It might work. My money says "no".

Hi,
I installed the CPU before 5 days, it woks, as well as i tested the CPU performance using the below tools and all the tests are passed;

1. Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool
2. Intel Extreme Tuning Utility.
3. PassMark Software.
4. UserBenchmark Software,

Regarding the temperature and battery life time, They don't effect, since the new CPU (i7-3632QM) power is the same with the last CPU (i5-3230M) power,

Good for you. We will tuck this one away for future reference. I just wish there was a way to know 100% in advance if the story will end happily as in this one or sadly as so many others.
