Pavilion - 15-cw1598na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have had my laptop for 18 months, it already has been in for repair under warranty, but now its out of warranty i am getting an issue. When running certain programs my laptop slows down to a crawl and not as good as it was.  I have run the HP diagnostics tool and all items pass, until it gets to the cpu, where the diagnostic tool locks up the computer. not sure if this is a common thing with the tool or there is something wrong with the cpu?

any ideas what is causing the slow down or why the cpu cannot be tested by the diagnostics tool?

Hi @Rh-ridgeback

Usually when a notebook seems to slow down, the issue is that the temp folder has not been cleared and there may be many gigabytes of unused files and folders that should be deleted.

  4. Click the OK button.
  5. Click the Cleanup system files button. ...
  6. Use the "Drives" drop-down menu and select the (C:)"

Manual method
Delete temporary files on Windows 10 version 1903 and later
  1. Open Settings on Windows 10.
  2. Click on System.
  3. Click on Storage.
  4. Under the “Local Disk” section, click the Temporary files option. Storage Settings (20H2)
  5. Select the temporary files you want to remove.
  6. Click the Remove files button.

On the CPU question:  In the Diagnostics, try running the System test (quick)

Since the notebook still runs, there probably isn't anything wrong with the processor.

Have you checked the Windows File Explorer?  Click on "this computer" and you will see your hard disk. If it is red instead of blue, there is indeed a problem.  A hard disk should never be utilized to storage capacity more than 85-90%. Beyond that point, bad things happen. The  Windows OS needs some free space to use as virtual memory. Without it, there will be issues. The PC will become more and more noticeably sluggish and the closer to full it will reach the point where it will no longer boot.
