CPU upgrade

Hello, 

I have an HP Pavilion DV7-3183CL I acquired, and it is in like-new condition surprisingly considering it’s age.. I also got the dock/stand  that was an optional accessory… all for the whopping price of $25 about a year ago. It came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64, and 8gb of ram. They kept the hard drive, but I put in a Crucial 500gb SSD.. that being said, i have had windows 10, and unofficially windows 11 on it (both running relatively smooth as it meets their “official minimum requirements”, it is now back to its original Windows 7 OE installation. I was curious if anyone knew of any upgrades.. aside from the SSD, I’ve never looked into it, because it always just ran. I’ve been told this is a one-off Costco special order laptop, as such no new bios for the MB.. Here are the specs that I have been able to find via CPU-Z

Intel i5-430m cpu

Nvidia GeForce G105m gpu

8gb ddr3 pc3-10700 (667mhz)

HP-365C motherboard w/ Arrandale Socket 989 rPGA.

my main interest is to know if I can up the speed for my ram (667 seems awfully slow), and if I can go up for my CPU.

I know it’s a very old system, but for what I paid for it, and the condition it’s in, I don’t mind.

I have seen manuals for many other older hp machines online, not with my exact product number, but other very similar laptops. And I have been able to use hp’s support site for a few laptops even older than this one. I’m just trying to verify with someone if this one is spec’d similar to other dv7 laptops so I can use the information from other ones since I seem to have got one of the only “Costco member” specific model.

 Just need another person to verify that the motherboard mine has is used in other mainline hp models that have information readily available.
I wouldn’t say there isn’t any information available anymore at all.

You should be able to upgrade the existing processor to one of these...

You have the max memory supported in the model series and the DDR3-1333 MHz memory runs in dual channel mode with a speed of 1066 MHz.

You multiply the 533 MHz reading you get from a memory performance utility by 2, such as the one you can download and install from the link below. 

I use the portable version.

The 533 MHz speed is the single channel mode speed.

This is the only reputable 3rd party driver website that I know of that has the drivers and the latest BIOS update HP released for your notebook.

Perfect! That is exactly what I was looking for! Turns out I already had the ram stashed away in a box (and it works way faster) and I just got a i5-580m on order from eBay. I know this laptop is old old, but it has a lot of life left in it, and if I can throw another $18 at it for a new cpu, will be a perfect starter laptop for one of my kids. Thank you for the info!

Well, i got the CPU, and disassembled the laptop super careful per the instructions from the service manual. It definitely appeared i had been the first person to ever do so. I took off the heatsinks, and removed and cleaned the cpu fan, which was good because there was a lot of dust built up around the blades and the lower half of the exhaust.

I swapped the cup and reassembled the laptop, only to get it powering up, but not getting past POST (no screen or hdd activity to be more specific).. so i tore it down again, and reinstalled the original CPU, and everything worked as normal.

My thoughts are that either 1. I got a bad CPU off ebay, or 2. the current bios for whatever reason does not support the i5-580m. 

Either way, a ram upgrade helped the speed a bit, and its running cooler. I will send the bad cpu back to the seller on ebay, and possibly try another. I am pretty happy with the speed of the ram and ssd combo though, its no gaming laptop and will serve its purpose as a media player/streamer well enough for my kids. 

the bios listed for it is F.15,  and as much as ive been able to tell, it is the only bios ever offered.. cant find any other info on it.

Sorry that the processor upgrade didn't work. 

Perhaps you got a bad one, but maybe try one of the lesser models that are still better than the one in there now
