Yes, it supports 16GB of RAM max with the following configutaions

MemoryTwo SODIMM slots - NON customer accessible / upgradeable
DDR3L-1600 Dual Channel Support
Supports up to 16 GB of system RAM in the following configurations:

● 16384-MB total system memory (8192×2)

● 12288-MB total system memory (8192×1) + (4096×1)

● 8192-MB total system memory (8192×1) or (4096×2)

● 6144-MB total system memory (4096×1) + (2048×1)

● 4096-MB total system memory (4096×1) or (2048×2)

I believe your machine is out of warranry now therfore you can upgrade yourself using part number for 8GB (one stick) 693374-005

Regards.

Thank you - so can I buy an 8 gig stick and have that installed along with the existing 6gb ?

HP Recommended

Existing 6 gig is 4 + 2 so you can get an 8 gig module but you would have to toss the 2 gig and install 4 + 8 = 12.

You might just want to add a 4 gig for 4 + 4 = 8. Because of a thing called "dual channel" which only works if you have a pair of the same sized and type of modules, 8 gigs in dual channel can actually outperform 12 gigs in single channel for most users.

As shown on the above list

    6144-MB total system memory (4096×1) + (2048×1)

and also from @Huffer you can upgrade to 12GB (old 4GB + new 8GB)   or 16 GB (2 new 8GB). The 2GB stick is useless.

Regards.

Right and memory is expensive right now so even upgrading from 6 gigs to 8 gigs will be noticeable because of dual channel and a lot less expensive.

Sorry chaps - another question. My boy complains that some of his games don't run well and we assumed it was the ram - will this be the case, or would it be the graphics card ?

HP Recommended

Its the video card...the Geforce 940M is not very powerful...an entry level dedicated video card. Its only a little better than the Intel integrated video. More RAM would not help gaming much, if any.

HP Recommended

Thank you - as i understand it, I can't change the video card on this laptop ?

You understand correctly
