Running Windows 10 home. Says Maximum memory for 64 bit is 128GB. However, when I go to my computer system information, it shows System Memory 6GB. Memory slot 1: 4GB Samsung 1600MHz. Memory slot 2: 2GB A-DATA Technology 1600 MHz. Would like to add more to speed up a bit.

Your specs begin on p. 5 for models 15-ay000 to 15-ay099 which is where you fit. P. 5 refers to the manual I linked in the post above.
6th gen processor models are shown to use DDR4-2133 memory.
Your is a 6th generation processor. I can only conclude you need DDR4-2133 memory.
Actual upgrade procedure begins on p. 52 of the Manual I linked above. Shows removal of the bottom cover. Likely you have not previously had to do such extensive disassembly to reach the memory modules. Technically this is not authorized to end users and does put the warranty in jeopardy but HP has assured as long as you don't break anything the warranty is safe.
This is the recomended memory:
Memory module (PC4, 17000, 2133-MHz) For use in models with 6th and 7th generation Intel Core processors: 8-GB 820570-005
This is an online auction with a good picture of the memory:
I would remove the bottom cover and look at the installed memory before buying and report back here if it is DDR3L-1600 because HP would need to know that is manual is not right.

Well it is going to be a lot less than 128 gigs but more than 6. Here is the Service manual:
You say the memory is shown to be a 4 gig and a 2 gig of 1600 speed but the specs on your model say it is running a single 4gb of DDR4-2133 and you have a 6th gen Intel i5 processor.
Can you confirm your full model number so we get this right on the first try? Odds are your laptop can take 16 gigs of RAM, 2 x 8 gig modules but it is not an easy upgrade.
