Welcome to our HP Community forum!
In most HP Chromebook 14 models, you unfortunately cannot upgrade the RAM.
Why?
The RAM is soldered directly to the motherboard in almost all Chromebook 14 models, including the ones with 4 GB.
This means there’s no RAM slot for you to add or replace memory like in many Windows laptops.
How to Confirm:
To be absolutely sure, check the exact model number (e.g., HP Chromebook 14a-na0023cl, 14-db0020nr, etc.) -but over 90% of HP Chromebook 14 units from the past several years come with non-upgradable RAM.
What Can You Do?
If your Chromebook is slowing down, try:
Restarting regularly (Chromebooks rely on RAM caching heavily).
Limiting the number of open tabs.
Using lighter apps/extensions.
If 4 GB just isn’t cutting it for your needs, the best move would be to consider a Chromebook with 8 GB RAM or more. Newer models are more responsive and can handle multitasking much better.
Let me know your exact model number, and I’ll confirm if yours is one of the rare exceptions that might have a RAM slot -but chances are, it’s not upgradeable.
How to Find Your Exact HP Chromebook Model Number:
Option 1: Check the Bottom of the Chromebook:
Flip the Chromebook over. Look for a label or fine print that includes:
Model Number (e.g., HP Chromebook 14a-na0023cl)
Product Number (SKU) — often labeled as “Product: XXXXXXX#ABA”
This is usually near barcodes.
Option 2: Use the Chrome OS System Info:
On your Chromebook, press Search + Esc to open the Task Manager.
Click on the "More" menu (three dots) and select "About Chrome OS" or:
Click the time (bottom-right corner)
Click the gear icon (⚙) to open Settings
Scroll to the bottom and click "About ChromeOS"
Then click "Diagnostics" or "Additional details"
You might see the model number listed under “Device information”

It's understandable you want more RAM in your Chromebook, especially with only 4GB onboard -but unfortunately, resoldering in new RAM isn't realistically doable on these devices.
Why?
The RAM in most HP Chromebook 14 models is BGA (Ball Grid Array) soldered, not socketed.
Replacing it would involve de-soldering the existing RAM chips and reballing and soldering new compatible chips — a process requiring specialized rework stations, microscopes, and expert-level skills.
Even if you had the tools and skill, finding the exact compatible 8GB RAM chips that the system’s firmware and board layout support would be nearly impossible outside of HP’s design lab.
In short: Resoldering isn’t a practical or safe way to upgrade RAM on this Chromebook.
If 4GB is limiting your productivity, your best bet is to shop for a Chromebook with 8GB of RAM pre-installed. There are several great options now, and prices have come down considerably in recent years.
Like I requested, let me know your exact model number -just to be 100% certain -but in almost all cases, upgradeability isn’t possible.
