Thanks. So the real question is, can any part of the laptop be upgraded to improve performance on video games? I have been told the graphics card, which is the most important part for games, is always soldered in with laptops. This question is really for my son, who would like to make the laptop in question more conducive to video game performance and quality.

Common problem and repeat "teachable moment" here in the Forum. Sadly, the answer is really just a flat "no". A laptop "is what it is" as far as gaming capability from when it is purchased. There is no way to add in a video card as in a desktop and no other upgrade will really do anything measurable for gaming.
It has Intel HD5500 video which is "integrated" meaning it uses/borrow the same memory as the rest of the system. Current integrated Intel HD video is way better than it used to be but it is not for serious gaming. You can play some older 3D games at lower settings but anything that kids really want to play is going to be beyond its ability.
Laptops that can game are very expensive; figure entry point $1000 and really more like $1500 and even $2000+ for anything really serious.

Thanks so much! It's actually not sad because we don't want all the hassle. My son just thinks he can do it and is insisting. I figured it made no sense but wanted some authoritative info so I could prove to him its a waste of time. So good news!
