Hi:

You would only be able to install one of the supported AMD processors in your notebook.

See chapter 1 of the service manual for the supported AMD processors.

Since I was curious about this, I looked up AMD Athlon II P340 vs Phenom II P650  performance, looks like maybe a 10% gain in performance. You would get much more performance adding a SATA 2.5" SSD and maxing the memory out. Or all 3 if you want.

Since the parts manual lists both AMD boards and Intel boards, is there any reason he could buy an Intel version and drop it in there? Obviously it would be a bigger cost, since a working motherboard would be much higher than an aging cpu.

What @pbroussard is trying to say is you can only install AMD processors on your motherboard because of the socket. AMD and Intel processors have different ways to plug into a motherboard and only one will work on any specific motherboard. Also, there is not a lot of difference among the compatible processors. Not much to gain by trying to upgrade. You could try to find an Intel board and processor but the cost of that might be too much. Your best general purpose upgrade is a solid state drive and max the memory. The laptop has just reached the age where it is going to be a compromise to try to work with it. Obsolete in other words.
