I have had a hp pavilion x2 detachable for over a year now and it is now out of warranty. There are lots of new windows 10 updates including security ones that cannot be installed because there isn't enough space on my c drive. I have tried all the troubleshooting options like moving files to an external drive, clearing temporary files, etc but none of these have made much difference. I barely had anything to remove on the laptop anyway. Is there a way that the laptops storage can be upgraded?

Yours is the kind you cannot upgrade except to swap out the motherboard if you have the 32 gig kind. They also make a 64 gig motherboard but the cost of the component is likely more than the laptop is worth.
I have recently made a study of this and posted a "how to" on getting Windows 10 1803 Build to run in 32 gigs of storage. I have one of these running Windows 10 1803 plus Office 365 plus a few security apps in 12.9 gigs leaving just over half of the drive for storage. It requires a clean reinstall of Windows and running a compression routine within Windows 10 and making some adjustments to some pretty deep settings but it makes these 32 gig machines useable.

It is going to be hotter than ambient air but should not be so hot you have to immediately pull your hand away. The whole charging circuit runs much hotter as the battery gets older. The Lithium cells take more power to put in the same charge as before so in physics terms more "work" equals more heat.
