I tried chatting with HP Support this evening to find out if I can upgrade my 1TB hybrid (M.2 2280 XG5 PCIe Gen3x4 TLC SS) to a newer 2TB SSD (such as https://smile.amazon.com/Intel-660p-2-0TB-80mm-978351/dp/B07GCLLKDC/) but the clear indication from the support agent was NO. They said, and I quote them directly here:

Expanding this means a larger drive (different size). We do not have upgrade options for the SSD, the only option would be to use a portable hard drive to have more space.

This seems ridiculous to me, but I thought I would attempt to confirm this here before investing a couple hundred bucks. I already have 16GB RAM and I wouldn't mind having more, but I doubt I actually need more. The larger and faster hard drive is probably going to get me much more bang for my buck.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Hi,

There is no limit to the capacity of the M2 PCIe NVMe drive in the notebook. If you are looking for a faster drive you should be looking at drives such as the M2 970 Evo Plus or Corsair SN 750 or similar.

On page 38 of service manual, you can see the steps to install the drive

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05357610

Max RAM for your model is 32GB of DDR4 2400MHz (2x16GB)

The RAM will run at 2133MHz. You are correct that a RAM upgrade will not make any difference unless you are using software which requires a huge amount of RAM.

Hope it helps,

David
