An M.2 SSD is actually faster than Optane. To have Optane you need a regular hard drive and then a PCIe/NVME M.2 disk and additional hardware support so that the Optane memory disk "accelerates" the hard drive. Optane modules are usually smaller like 16 gb and like I said, have to be installed together with a regular hard drive. Your model does not support either an NVME/PCIe M.2 (it supports SATA-3 M.2 disks only) and does not have Optane support. You are not missing anything as compared to what you do have.

There are self-contained PCIe x1 Optane desktop modules and then there are the kind which are used in laptops (only a very few very new models) which is a small M.2 disk used with a regular hard drive. The speeds are different, much different. Likely close to but not quite as good as what you are seeing which is about average for a SATA-3 M.2 disk. You can upgrade the memory without voiding the warranty as long as you don't damage anything in the process and obviously HP will not warrant the memory you buy. If you need help picking out memory to buy or installing it let us know.
