Pavillion dv7-6178us
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

My DV7-6178US quit charging and turning on out of nowhere so I replaced the motherboard (659093-001) which I sourced off of Ebay.  The bios of the new board identifies itself as a "Casablanca h710".  I have updated the bios to the latest available, F.1B Rev A.

The problem is that I can install 32 bit Win7 but if I attempt any 64 bit installation it fails.   During installation Win7 64 bit gives a stop error of 0X0000007E or 0X0000001E everytime.  Ubuntu 64 bit mentions a lack of IRQ interrupt/handler and quits.

One thing noteworthy is that 32bit Win7, AMD Catalyst and HP Support assistant were never able to correctly identify the Radeon 6470m video card.  HP just plain failed to offer video drivers at all and windows grabbed a 7400M series driver which rendered the card inoperable.  Once I manually selected the correct driver it worked just fine.  DXDIAG never finds a problem but it doesn't see the NVIDIA 6470M either, only the onboard Intel VGA.

The board also states that Vista was the original OS, if that is of any interest.

The computer was down for a long time so I formatted the drive and used it as storage for a while so the HP recovery is not an option, I have to do a regular OS install.

I have tried everything I can think of in the BIOS which is spartan at best.  I have tried both switchable/fixed graphics to no avail.  There are no options for setting PCI/AHCI.  I have tested my RAM and all is well.  I have tried installing windows with every optional ribbon disconnected from the motherboard and just one stick of RAM (and I alternated sticks for good measure).  I have tried installing from an original disc from Microsoft, from an copy that I downloaded from digital river way back when and even from a USB thumb drive.

At this point all that I can think is that the board is meant for a foreign market even though it has the correct part number on it.  Perhaps something is different with the DMI table that messes with 64 bit stuff?? I have tried two different copies of this board, both  "Casablanca" branded, both with the exact same behavior.  Could my processor have gotten hurt and still run 32 bit fine but not 64 bit?

I have included a copy of DXDIAG (from 32bit Win7) below.  Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Problem solved, it is the processor.

I tested the board with a different processor; 64 bit Ubuntu 16 installed and ran perfectly.   Somehow my chip is able to run 32 bit without an issue but not 64 bit.   I'll snag another chip and be on my way.

Thanks for all of the attempted help.

Not a "solution", but a question/suggestion:

> Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2670QM CPU @ 2.20GHz (8 CPUs), ~2.2GHz

> Memory: 8192MB RAM

> Available OS Memory: 2510MB RAM

Given that 32-bit Windows 7 has a minimum requirement of 1 GB of RAM, will you "settle" for having "only" 4GB of RAM installed (i.e., you remove 4GB), given that 32-bit Windows will use between 3.0 GB and 3.2 GB of the 4 GB ?

It's kind of a "waste" having 8 CPUs, when you probably will never need all of them, but sticking with 32-bit Windows will give you a "working" computer, instead of a non-working "pile-of-parts".

I thought of that but I had really hoped to ressurect it for school purposes which will include resource intensive programs such as Mathematica, MatLab and ROOT.  I had also hoped to run a VM on it.

I have thought about trying a different motherboard part number  after this to avoid the possibility of more of this particular imported board (assuming someone here solidly says it is something to do with the "Casablanca h710" causing issues).  I will also be testing the board with another Intel Sandy Bridge processor later this week to rule out damage to my chip (which I highly doubt it has problems since it runs flawlessly in 32bit and ran 64bit Win7 until the power management side of the original mobo took a dump).  If my chip checks out and I have no viable suggestions by the end of the week I will probably take it up with the seller.  The crazy thing is that he claims to have sold a bunch of these without issue.  I've never had a problems installing any OS on an HP laptop before so I really think the Casablanca bit has something to do with it.

Thanks though!

I am not sure what the problem might be but you could possibly attempt to install Windows 10 64-bit using the downloadable image from Microsoft just to see if it installs.

HP Recommended

I tried something similar, I made a Win 8.1 USB installer using the Microsoft tool.  It failed due to a "kmode exception error", or something similar, right off the bat.  Anything 64 bit that I have thrown at it (win7, win 8.1, Ubuntu 16, acronis true image 2012) fails very quickly.  Anything linux based mentions an IRQ type problem.

I'll give win10 a shot but at this point I can't help but think it is down to a board or chip issue, leaning towards board but I need to do more research as to what is responsible for handling IRQ requests.

HP Recommended

Okay, yes, I was going to suggest either Windows 8.1 or 10, that does sound like a very unique problem, you are getting some different errors with everything you try.  You probably already set the BIOS to the default values.  I see you also disconnected all of the peripherals that you could and tried taking out/swapping the RAM.

You can install Ubuntu to a USB drive so you might try that to rule out a problem with the hard drive or controller if you have not already.  You could also install Ubuntu to the SD slot (although not all laptops can boot from the SD slot).

HP Recommended

> You can install Ubuntu to a USB drive

You don't need to "install" -- if you can boot UBUNTU from a CD or a USB, you can run the "Live" version of UBUNTU -- it does not "touch" the disk-drive at all, but otherwise gives a good "work-out" to the RAM/motherboard/CPU.

HP Recommended

Yes, but the intention is to determine why no 64-bit OS will install to the hard drive.  If an installation to the USB or SD card succeeds, that would point suspicion to the hard drive or controller.

HP Recommended

My attempted Ubuntu install was actually a USB drive with a Ubuntu Live distro image on it so I essentially did do just that.  They standard Ubuntu install is "live" with the option to install once it's up and running.  I can try that again to get the exact error code again if anyone thinks that would be helpful.

My computer does not allow for the SD card to be a bootable option.  For further clarification, I have tried installing to the original HDD drive that came with the computer and then to an SSD and both fail at the same point.  I have also ran the system test in the bios which checks both the RAM and hard drive and it all passed.

It's so puzzling since it all runs 32 bit anything without a glitch but anything 64 bit falls on its face instantly.
