Before removing the bottom cover, follow these steps:1.Shut down the computer. If you are unsure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system.2.Disconnect all external devices connected to the computer.3.Disconnect the power from the computer by first unplugging the power cord from the AC outlet and then unplugging the AC adapter from the computer.To remove the bottom cover:1.Position the computer upside down with the front toward you.2.Remove the six Phillips M2.0×13.0 screws (1) on the top half of the bottom cover.3.Remove the three Phillips M2.0×5.0 screws (2) along the bottom of the bottom cover.36Chapter 5 Removal and replacement procedures for Authorized Service Provider parts.

 

4.Using a non-marking tool, start prying near the middle of the computer near the display and work around to separate the bottom cover from computer (1), and then remove the bottom cover (2).Reverse this procedure to install the bottom cover.Component replacement procedures.

Some open top down and some from the bottom...no sense in speaking about "most HP laptops" in the abstract as you can only work on a specific one right in front of you so you need the Service Manual. Blindly removing screws is a recipe for disaster.
