Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am having an issue where Port is no longer show up under the device manager in Windows 10. I have used this many times during school, so I know that it worked before. I am an embedded systems engineer and need to be able to develop on an Intel FPGA development board, but I cannot communicate with the development board if I cannot identify the COM port that it is using.

Hi @subliminalyzok

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

To resolve the issue where COM ports are not showing up in Device Manager, follow these steps:

Check Connections:

  • Ensure the FPGA development board is properly connected to your computer.
  • Verify that the cables are securely connected and not damaged.

Restart the Computer:

  • Sometimes a simple restart can resolve many issues related to hardware devices.

Enable Hidden Devices in Device Manager:

  • Open Device Manager.
  • Click View in the menu bar and select Show hidden devices.
  • Check if the COM ports appear.

Reinstall Drivers for Your FPGA Development Board:

  • Visit the Intel website or the manufacturer's support page for your FPGA development board to download the latest drivers.
  • Install the drivers and restart your computer.

Check Device Manager Again:

  • Open Device Manager and look for the COM ports under "Ports (COM & LPT)".

Update USB Drivers:

  • In Device Manager, expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers section.
  • Right-click on each USB device and select Update driver.
  • Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.

Check BIOS Settings (if applicable):

  • Ensure that COM ports are enabled in the BIOS settings.
  • Restart the computer and enter BIOS settings. Look for settings related to COM ports and ensure they are enabled.

Run Hardware Troubleshooter:

  • Open Settings.
  • Go to Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
  • Run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter.

Use Command Prompt to Check for COM Ports:

  • Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
  • Run the command mode to list the available COM ports.

Check for Windows Updates:

  • Ensure your Windows 10 is up to date. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates.

Use Third-Party Software:

  • Sometimes, using third-party software like "USBDeview" can help to identify USB devices connected to your computer.

Reinstall Device Manager:

  • If none of the above steps work, consider reinstalling Device Manager:
    • Open Device Manager.
    • Right-click on each USB and COM port entry, select Uninstall.
    • Restart the computer and let Windows reinstall the drivers.
