I get the message in the image below when updating from BIOS 17 to BIOS 18 in my HP Spectre x360. I have just changed SDD because the previous one died.  The new SSD is a 500GB msi Spatium M450.  IThere are about 350GB free
I have installed all new drivers and software using HP Support Assistant and Windows 11 Pro is up to date

@LufiG,

That error means that the EFI system partition (ESP), not C: drive, does not have enough free space for the BIOS update.

Your ESP is most likely 100 MB in size.

You can either increase the size of ESP or delete some files on it.

If your ESP has an 'HP' folder, see if it stores BIOS files. If yes, you can safely delete the files. If no, you can delete the HP folder to free up space for the BIOS update.

The ESP is a hidden partition. You can assign a volume letter to it and run notepad in command prompt, so you can easily view the content of the ESP in File Explorer. To delete a file, just select and right click on it and click 'delete.'

See this thread for detailed instructions.

I followed your instructions in the threads you recommended with the only exception that I only erased all files within the HP folder and all subfolders using the " Del *.* /s " command.  I then just went to the Support page in HP and updated the BIOS from there.  It worked without a hitch and now the BIOS was updated with version F.18 ver A

For future reference, these are the steps I followed:

  • I've opened command prompt with Administrative rights
  • I've used the command "mountvol B: /s" to mount the EFI System partition (hidden)
  • I've used the "B:" command to move to the mounted volume
  • I've used the command "Dir" to inspect the content of such volume, and I've found the HP folder
  • I've then positioned myself in the HP Folder and used the "Dir /s" command to view the contents of the folder and subfolders
  • I've then used the "Del *.* /s" command (- Y to confirm each step) to erase all files within the HP Folder and all subfolders, therefore avoiding deleting any other Folder and only erasing all files.
  • I then just went to the Support page in HP and updated the BIOS from there, without encountering any errors
  • I've restarted the PC when requested
  • The new BIOS F.18 got deployed smoothly without any issue

Thanks again for your help
