HP OMEN 15 J2M88LA
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I haven't been able to update the BIOS on my HP OMEN 15 (J2M88LA) to version F40, the update executable runs fine but when I reboot the computer I don't get the update sreen and the BIOS configuration still shows version F38.Any ideas on how to get this to work?

I'm running a clean install of Windows 10 Pro Creators Update 1703, deleted the HP partitions (I have the Windows 8.1 recovery on a USB drive) and have BitLocker enabled.

Splendid effort and superb description of the issue. Kudos to you on that score. 🙂

  • Does it update successfully and then it displays the same bios version that came with the computer?
  • Have you tried to update the bios from HP support assistant?

For a start please try these steps:
  • Please roll back the bios from this link: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02693833  and then update the bios from here: http://hp.com/drivers and then follow the on-screen instructions.

Then check the version of the bios. If this does not work, please run the HP support assistant to detect the bios and other drivers and install it. Please check this link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c03467905 Please follow the steps from this link and follow the option under “My Devices - Specifications, troubleshooting, and device specific information” and “Checking for HP updates

This should do the trick for you.

The BIOS update process goes well until I reboot, I'm not getting the BIOS update screen during POST and the BIOS version remains the same.

I haven't been able to update the BIOS from Windows, maybe there's a compatibility problem with Windows 10 1703 Creators Update?

I'll try the USB drive method described in the second link as soon as I can.

Hi @Roberto_Gomez,

I reviewed the response comprehensively. Brilliant effort and great troubleshooting. Kudos to you on that score to try and fix the issue. 🙂

If this does not work, please try the USB bios update option.

If the issue persists backup all your files and restore windows to factory settings from this link: http://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04758961 and select the option "Recovery when Windows 10 does not start correctly"

Then update the bios and then update the Creators update. This should do the trick for you. This looks like the only option if the USB bios method fails to do the trick for you.

Trust me I've done everything here to assist you by keeping your best interest in mind. 🙂 You've  been absolutely superb to work with, by displaying great technical skills. 🙂 I thank you again for your time. It has been an absolute privilege to share this platform with you. 🙂

The USB method worked, I didn't want to reinstall Windows just to update the BIOS. I had to enable virtualization because the BIOS settings get reset to the defaults.

Thanks for all the help.
