HP 15.6 inch Laptop PC 15-d5000 (4V9Y3AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I think the keyboard in my laptop may have an electrical short. I've cleaned it with air, updated the drivers, and all the things. Nothing software related is helping. The ESC, F4, F7, F11, backspace, *, 8 (right side), "', G, H, and Windows key are nonresponsive. For a few weeks they would lag a bit when pressed, but if I gently held the key down eventually it would start typing again. Now they're completely kaput.

Would replacing the keyboard help and is it possible to replace they keyboard in this model?

Hi @user12345679

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

If you suspect that your HP 15.6 inch Laptop PC 15-d5000 has an electrical short affecting the keyboard, and software solutions haven't resolved the issue, here are steps you can take to address this hardware problem:

Troubleshooting a Nonresponsive Keyboard

Check for Physical Damage:

  • Inspect the keyboard for any visible physical damage, liquid spills, or other issues that might affect connectivity.

External Keyboard Test:

  • Connect an external USB keyboard to your laptop. If the external keyboard works properly, it suggests the issue is isolated to the laptop's keyboard.

Clean and Reconnect:

  • Even if you've cleaned it with air, you may want to physically remove the keyboard (if feasible and if you're comfortable doing so) to check for loose connections internally. This should only be attempted if you are experienced in handling laptop hardware.

Keyboard Replacement or Repair:

  • If you suspect a hardware fault, the keyboard may need to be replaced. Contact HP phone support team or a certified technician for repair services. If your laptop is under warranty, reach out to HP Phone Support for repair or replacement options.

Battery and Power Cycle:

  • Power off the laptop, disconnect the battery (if detachable), and hold down the power button for 30 seconds. Then reconnect the battery and turn on the laptop to see if the keyboard responsiveness improves.

Check BIOS Settings:

  • Restart your laptop and access the BIOS settings by pressing the appropriate key during startup (usually Esc or F10 for HP). Check if the keyboard responds here. If these keys are also not working, it indicates a hardware issue.
