Microsoft Windows 11

This just started happening today, but my s and x  key (which I am currently copy and pasting) have stopped working. I restarted my laptop multiple times, I've tried uninstalling the keyboard, and I've checked under the caps and there is no gunk or anything underneath. The keys have just stopped registering all together. Thank you in advance.

@Atlas_, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand how frustrating it can be when certain keys suddenly stop working. Since you've already tried some good initial steps like restarting, uninstalling the keyboard driver, and checking for debris, let's go a bit deeper to isolate whether this is a hardware or software issue.

Test the Keyboard in BIOS

This helps determine if the issue is hardware-related.

  • Shut down your notebook.
  • Power it on and immediately start pressing the Esc key repeatedly (or F10 on some models) to enter the Startup Menu.
  • Once in BIOS, try pressing the S and X keys.
    • If they don’t work in BIOS, it’s likely a hardware issue.
    • If they do work, it may be a software/driver issue in Windows.

Use HP Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI)

HP provides built-in diagnostics to test the keyboard.

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Turn it on and immediately press Esc, then F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  • Choose Component Tests > Keyboard Test.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions and test all keys.

Boot into Safe Mode

This helps rule out third-party software conflicts.

  • Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and hit Enter.
  • Go to the Boot tab and check Safe boot > Minimal.
  • Restart your PC and test the keys in Safe Mode.

If the keys work in Safe Mode, a background app or driver may be interfering.

External USB Keyboard Test

Connect an external USB keyboard and check if S and X work there. If they do, it further confirms the built-in keyboard may be faulty.

If the keys fail in BIOS and diagnostics, the keyboard may need servicing. In that case, please visit the nearest HP authorized service center, the service team will check and assist you.
Kindly follow this link to locate the nearest HP service center: HP® Service Center Locator - United States | HP® Support

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
