Hp DV7-7227cl
Microsoft Windows XP (64-bit)

I replace the motherboard on my HP Envy DV7-7227cl. After it was installed. I checked HP Assistant. Now it shows it's a DV6 Notebook PC. Product number C2M16UAR#ABA. It's running 8.1 64 bit. Why did it change? Also I tried to restore to factory settings with the disks. It fails. If I have the hard drive reformated and erase everything on it. Can I use the restore disks to factory settings? Any ideas on what I should or can do. Thanks.

Hi Larry,

Yes, DV6-7245us recovery media will only successfully work in your case.

As I said, you also clean install Windows 8.1 64 bit, free of cost using Microsoft windows media creation tool by creating bootable installation USB.

Hi,

Please contact HP in your region to resolve this issue.

They can only help you in tattooing BIOS in motherboard with exact hardware and model info including serial number. We don't have any access to HP propriety BIOS tools.

The mis-match of this info with original recovery media is the reason it is failing to reset to factory setting.

Thanks, so deleting everything on the hard drive won't work?  I looked under the laptop and there is no sticker for serial number or model number. Only numbers I have is what HP Assistant shows. Not sure if it's the serial nymber for DV7.

Can't find online if I can download BIOS upgrade or change it.

I did some checking and now after changing the motherboard. My laptop is now a HP Envy DV6-7245us. I checked with HP service store here. They tied to sell a operating disk for windows for over $125. I tried online with HP and they don't have it because of the serial number. I did a search on 3rd parties and I found this place https://restoredisks.com . For $26.99 plus $7.00 for shipping overseas. I'm not sure if this is the right one to buy or if it would work? Any suggests will help. Thanks

You can check in BIOS setup by tapping f10 as soon as you power on laptop, for knowing the current product number, serial number, specs of board.

Now a question: from where did you buy this new motherboard? Why you replaced it?
Did it come with Windows 8.1 64 bit after replacement?

May be hard drive was clean installed with Windows 8.1 using free Microsoft windows media creation tool (legal) , which installs Windows 8.1 in machine that came with Windows 8. It get activated automatically retrieving product key details from BIOS chip on the new motherboard.

From my research in HP webpages,
dv7-7227cl with actual product number C2N70UA, specs here, comes with Windows 8 64 bit:
http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03484421

The new specs HPSA is showing after board replacement is of dv6-7245us with product number C2M16UA. It comes with Windows 8 64bit:
http://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c03497843

Deleting everything in hard drive or doing BIOS upgrade will not rectify this mismatch between your original recovery discs for i.e. for dv7-7227cl and current BIOS info (of dv6-7245us).

Even if you buy recovery discs of original board for dv7-7227cl from 3rd party sellers , it'll also fail because of mismatch with board BIOS info.

You should directly contact HP for rectifying BIOS board info. Nothing we can do from here. We're not from HP. HP maintains no official presence here. This is not official HP technical support. This is just community with volunteers.

If you need to clean install Windows 8.1 64 bit again (free and legal), you can easily do it using Microsoft windows media creation tool by creating bootable installation USB. It'll retrieve windows product activation key of Windows 8 64 bit from BIOS.

I went to a computer shop here in Thailand and they said the motherboard was shot. So they replaced it. The PC wouldn't start up also charging the battery would work also.

Since it changed to HP DV6-7245us. Buying the disks for DV6-7245us should work? I hope. The disks for DV7-7227 are useless. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks Larry

Thanks. I'm going to order the recovery disks for DV6-7245us from a third party (https://restoredisks.com/). It will probably take over 2 weeks to get here. Then I'll see how it goes and post it here. The main reason is I want to have it set to factory settings & sell it.

You're welcome.

Do let me know how it goes.
