Hello @CrD234,
Usually, using an underpowered AC adapter creates more issues than using a higher wattage AC adapter as the laptop should automatically take in the current it needs. Using an underpowered AC adapter may cause performance issues on the laptop and ruin the lifespan of the charger. Therefore, using a higher powered AC adapter is usually OK.
I did actually happen to watch that exact same video 2 days ago - not till the very end though. I have no idea what Austin did but his situation seems very weird. A Macbook charger was fine but an HP-branded charger did not work. But then his entire video seemed to deal with a basically defective laptop.
The USB-C port should comply with PD 3.0 standards and apparently supports 65 or 90W power adapters.
IDK what happened in the video but that is very weird.

Using a plug type power adapter that delivers more power that the original unit is not likely to be an issue. As long as it delivers the voltage required by the notebook. Using a power adapter that delivers a higher or lower voltage may indeed cause damage to your notebook. Higher wattage is not really an issue.

Thanks for all the input.
Honestly, I know its a small risk something will go wrong with the laptop. But its also a very small benefit over just carrying my own charger at all times. So I think I wont try it.
If you get more evidence that this is indeed safe, please do let me know though.
I'll probably update this in a few months time when I accidentally forgot my own charger, was working on something super important, and decided to try out of desperation. 🙂
Till then - thank you all!
Best,
CrD

Hello @CrD234,
I understand your concerns. However, there is no reason for HP to have included all this information if there was truly no intention of charging. I even asked Sales and they told me USB-C charging is possible.
Either Austin has clearly done something incorrect or the laptop was defective if literally attempting to charge a device, according to the device's capabilities, fried the motherboard of some sorts.
And as stated by 3 people, higher wattage AC adapters are not a problem.
During the operation of any device, there is always risk - let it be failure or data loss. Many users of this platform receive hardware upgrade recommendations and manage. Therefore I do feel that there is an overwhelming concern over a feature of this device but I completely respect your decision.
Also, if you do feel that your original question of the charging capability has been answered to some extent, considering the abundance of evidence, I do suggest accepting an appropriate answer as the solution since many users may have similar questions regarding this issue and may find the info here helpful.
All the best,
Eddy
