HP ENVY 13 x360 - Ryzen 2500u
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I just purchased a Envy 13 x360 with the Ryzen CPU.

Just wondering if its possible to charge this through the USB C port?

The online specs say this is possible, but I have heard some conflicting reports - so clarification would be good.

Specifically, my wife owns a Spectre, and that has only USB-C Charging.

Would be great if we could just carry one charger for both laptops when travelling.

So can I safely use her USB C charger on my laptop?

If it is not possible to charge, what is the downside, can the laptop be damaged if I hook up a charger, or will it just not charge?

Thanks for the help!

Hello @CrD234,

I understand your concerns. However, there is no reason for HP to have included all this information if there was truly no intention of charging. I even asked Sales and they told me USB-C charging is possible.

Either Austin has clearly done something incorrect or the laptop was defective if literally attempting to charge a device, according to the device's capabilities, fried the motherboard of some sorts.

And as stated by 3 people, higher wattage AC adapters are not a problem.

During the operation of any device, there is always risk - let it be failure or data loss. Many users of this platform receive hardware upgrade recommendations and manage. Therefore I do feel that there is an overwhelming concern over a feature of this device but I completely respect your decision.

Also, if you do feel that your original question of the charging capability has been answered to some extent, considering the abundance of evidence, I do suggest accepting an appropriate answer as the solution since many users may have similar questions regarding this issue and may find the info here helpful.

All the best,

Eddy

Hello @CrD234,

Is your laptop perhaps one of the HP ENVY 13-agxxxx x360 Convertible PCs? (The x's stand for a number between 0-9)

If so, yes, it looks like these new ENVY Ryzen laptops support USB-C PD charging.

Your wife's Spectre USB-C charger is most likely 65W and your laptop's AC adapter seems to output 45W. A higher wattage AC adapter is usually not a problem.

Reply back with a specific model/product number to confirm or in case the above laptop is incorrect. (Please do not post serial numbers on the HP Support Forum)

Information on how to find a laptop's model/product number is detailed in this HP document.

Best regards,

Eddy

Hi Eddy,

Thanks for the reply!

Mine is a

HP ENVY x360 13-ag0700ng

(Bought in germany, delivered yesterday)

I dont know the precise model of hers, it was bought in New York February 2017, got an i7, 16gig of ram, 512gb ssd, 13 inch screen

So it should be fine?

And even if it does not work, I guess I dont risk damage to the laptop if I just try it out?

Thanks a lot again!

In response to a request for information recently, HP Experts were advised by an internal HP Expert employee that

"Our PCs don't have both AC adapter ports and USB Type-C power adapters.  It's either/or."

If a notebook has a header on the notebook for a plug to be used with a power adapter, using a USB Type-C power adapter is not a viable option.

@EddyK  This was discussed in a thread in the InnerCircle. It appears that you happened to miss reading that one, so it was information you did not have at your disposal.

Thanks Erico for clarifying - I won't be using the other charger then.

The Maintenence & service guide is vague on the USB Type-C support so I have asked for more clarification.

You are definitely on the safe side when using the Power adapter with the plug for your notebook.

Hello @erico,

I really appreciate the pointer and I did actually read that bit but I do want to say that it may not be safe to assume the norm anymore - that is, that USB-C charging does not work on laptops with proprietary barrel charging ports.

This has already been debunked on the new HP 8xx G5 Elitebooks which allow AC adapter charging or USB-C charging. (Confirmed by multiple reviewers)

Furthermore, I would find it quite disappointing if HP had truly messed up all those specifications documents which clearly include Power Delivery on these new Ryzen laptops. This was a crucial point missing in all the previous users' laptops specifications that prevented USB-C charging.

In addition, I had recently replied to a user of a new HP ENVY USB-C laptop with the key mention of Power Delivery in their specifications. They had confirmed that they were able to charge their laptop only during sleep and I repeatedly had to tell him/her that this would be the case if he/she insisted on using a 10W USB-C charger on a laptop using a 65W AC adapter.

I also would like to respectfully question the information provided by that certain employee given that I did find certain information he may have given out a few weeks ago a bit, in short, confusing. This would be reflected in a reply in the corresponding thread in the Inner Circle I will make later.

@CrD234, please try your wife's USB-C charger and do let us know what happens.

Kind regards,

Eddy

Was playing around earlier with my Envy X360 13m-ag0xxx and it did indeed charge from the 27w brick provided with my Essential PH-1.  It even lit the small LED next to the power jack when the PD negotiation was complete.

Hello @RaksinSergal,

Thank you for confirming that.

I believe these ag0xxx laptops use 45W AC adapters so the fact that 27W works is a bit surprising.

Pretty rare hearing someone use the Essential PH-1. I was eager to wait and purchase the second generation until I heard that Essential was basically shutting down. Such a unique concept but it didn't gain enough attention.

Kind regards,

Eddy

Hi,

Thank you all for the informing discussion

Two things:
1) my wife just left on business travel, will be two weeks before I can try now sadly.

2) what is the worst case scenario if I use an overpowered charger on it? I'd rather not use it than blow up my laptop...

I don't fully believe this video, would not have bought the laptop if I did, but still the closing comments are worrying
