I think my laptop's charging port may be going bad. Sometimes if the charging cable moves, charging is stopped. Then by wiggling the cable or unplugging and plugging it back in, it starts working again. I work from home on this laptop so hoping to find the part and replace quickly in case it stops charging completely.
Where would I get the charging port replaced and does anyone have a link to the correct part on a site like Amazon/eBay/Walmart? Is this charging port soldered to the motherboard or would I be able to replace it myself?

Hi @CT2379,
We understand how important your laptop is for working from home, and we’ll do our best to guide you. Based on the behaviour you described, charging stopping when the cable moves and starting again when you adjust it, this typically indicates either:
- A loose or worn charging cable, or
- A worn or damaged DC-in (charging) port on the laptop.
Before considering replacement, we recommend trying a few quick checks.
1. Check the AC Adapter and Cable
Please confirm the following:
- Inspect the charger cable and connector tip for bending, looseness, or damage.
- Try charging from a different wall outlet.
- If possible, test with another compatible HP charger.
Sometimes the issue is the adapter rather than the laptop port.
2. Perform a Hard Reset
This can clear temporary hardware issues.
- Turn off the laptop.
- Disconnect the AC adapter.
- Remove any USB devices or accessories.
- Press and hold the Power button for about 15 seconds.
- Reconnect the adapter and turn the laptop back on.
3. Inspect the Charging Port
Please check the port on the laptop:
- Look for dust or debris inside the port.
- See if the port moves or feels loose when the charger is plugged in.
A loose internal connector can cause intermittent charging.
4. Is the Charging Port Replaceable?
This depends on the exact HP laptop model.
- On some HP models, the DC-in jack is a separate cable component that can be replaced without soldering.
- On other models, the port is soldered directly to the motherboard, which requires specialized repair equipment.
Because of these variations, the correct part number must be identified using your laptop’s exact model or serial number.
5. Where to Get the Correct Replacement Part
For the most accurate and reliable replacement, we recommend purchasing parts through an HP Authorized Parts Store or HP Service Center.
An authorized store or technician can also confirm whether the charging port is modular or soldered before ordering the part.
