Hi @Fraz12

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to assist you.

When your HP Omen 16 runs smoothly while charging but experiences a decline in performance after unplugging, it's primarily due to power management settings and battery-saving features. Here’s a detailed explanation:

Why Performance Drops When Unplugged

Power Management Settings:

  • Laptops are designed to conserve battery life when not plugged in. This often means reducing CPU and GPU performance to extend battery longevity. The system may throttle performance to prevent excessive battery drain.

Thermal Management:

  • When plugged in, the laptop can run at higher performance levels without worrying about heat management as much. When on battery, it may reduce performance to keep temperatures down.

Battery Saver Mode:

  • Windows may automatically activate a power-saving mode that limits background processes and reduces performance when unplugged.

Is It OK to Keep It Plugged In?

Modern Battery Technology: Most modern laptops have smart battery management systems that prevent overcharging, so it’s generally safe to keep your laptop plugged in after it reaches 100%. However, consistently keeping it plugged in can lead to faster battery degradation over time.

Best Practices:

  • Occasional Discharge: It’s beneficial to occasionally let the battery discharge to around 20% and then recharge it. This helps maintain battery health.
  • Avoid Overheating: Ensure your laptop has adequate ventilation and isn’t overheating while plugged in.

Additional Tips

Adjust Power Settings:

  • Go to Settings > System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings to adjust your power plan. You can customize it to improve performance when unplugged.

Battery Calibration:

  • Consider calibrating your battery occasionally to ensure accurate readings and performance.

Check for Background Processes:

  • Use Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) to monitor for any background processes that may be consuming resources when unplugged.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.
