Hi,

I would like to know if it is possible to charge my laptop  HP 15-cx0017nc in a car and how - I assume, there are two options:

1) via USB-C

2) via adapter plugged into car's charging port

My first question - is it possible to charge my laptop via USB-C?

Secondly, I am interested in info regarding what specifications should an appropriate product have, before I buy it - i.e. plug shape/voltage/current...

Thank you, any help much appreciated

The specs of your machine is

  1. Charge using USB-C port: No, you can't. The USB-C port on your machine does NOT support Power Delivery.
  2. Using adapter: yes, your machine requires 135 W AC power adapter therefore you need an adapter 12V DC to 135W out for it. Actually I was using the following adapter for many my weekend trips when I was on call support to charge my notebook and batteries for my video and still cameras

Hi,

thank you for your reply. I have additional question -

1) Why does my laptop not support Power Delivery, when it is written in specifications:
"1 USB 3.1 Type-C™ Gen 1 (Data Transfer up to 5 Gb/s, Power Delivery, DisplayPort™ 1.2, HP Sleep and Charge); 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1 (1 HP Sleep and Charge); 1 HDMI 1.4; 1 RJ-45; 1 headphone/microphone combo"

2) Is there some option for charging, where I would plug mu PC in a car cigarette lighter?

Thank you

Sorry my reading. That means you can charge your machine using USB-C port BUT finding a product for charging from your car using USB-C is a question mark. Please let members know when you have found one. Many thanks. Does it come with USB-C charger or normal 135W charger ?

It still recommend my option: using 12V DC to 110V-220V AC and you need 135W.

And what should be the power output/input through the USB-C port?

Firstly please read

Laptops that rely entirely on USB-C, meanwhile, might not charge with just any charger. PCWorld, in its testing, found that HP’s Spectre x2 wouldn’t charge with any USB-C charger besides its own. HP said that that was intentional because a bad charger could damage the device, or cause it to malfunction. Other devices, like the Apple MacBook Pro, don’t have such tight restrictions — a new USB-C authentication system could help with this issue in the near future

That means you need a compatible charger. HP does have

     https://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-usb-c-travel-power-adapter-65w

Looks like it needs at least 65W. But it uses AC directly. Many people on this forum say they need more wattage for machines with dedicated GPU. I believe HP does not have 12V to USB-C product(s) at this stage.

Regards.
