I would like to upgrade my 1TB HDD drive to a 2TB SSD Drive. How do I clone my disk and how difficult is it to replace? Are there step by step directions?

Welcome to our HP User Forum!
Besides a 2TB SSD drive, you need a SATA to USB cable, such as this one: Amazon.com: SATA to USB Cable, EYOOLD USB 3.0 to SATA III Hard Drive Adapter Converter for 2.5 Inch ..., and you may need a "7mm to 9.5mm Adapter 2.5in Solid State Drive SSD Laptop Hard Drive Spacer", such as this one: Amazon.com: ZRM&E 7mm to 9.5mm Adapter 2.5in Solid State Drive SSD Laptop Hard Drive Spacer : Electr....
Next, you need cloning software. If your new 2TB SSD happens to be made by Samsung, use their "Samsung SSD Magician" cloning software, to be downloaded from here: Samsung Magician & SSD Tools & Software Update | Samsung Semiconductor Global ("Samsung Magician Software for Consumer SSD - Magician Software").
Besides Samsung Magician, one of the most user-friendly freeware universal cloning software options available is Macrium Reflect Free, to be downloaded from here: Macrium Software | Reflect Free Edition ("Reflect 8 Free Commercial").
If you choose the Macrium cloning option, here is a step-by-step instruction link: How to Clone a Hard Drive | PCMag.
Hope this was helpful.

Correct, I completely understand: you only need the SATA to USB cable temporarily in order to clone/connect your SSD to your HDD drive. Once the cloning has completed and your laptop is powered off, unplug the SATA to USB cable, remove the SSD, disconnect your laptop's battery, and swap your HDD with your newly cloned SSD drive.
Then reconnect/reinstall your battery and put your laptop back together.
When you turn on your laptop, it should recognize your new SSD as its primary boot drive.
