HP Spectre x360 - 15-ap012dx (ENERGY STAR)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am interested in upgrading my HP Spectre x360 - 15-ap012dx laptop from the original SSD drive to a newer, faster, and larger one. However, I am having a hard time determining if my computer is compatible with NVM or PCle interfaces. I know that currently it is a SATA SSD (LITEON CV1-8B256-HP) but I have seen that some HP computers are compatible with both.

Will there be any negative effects if compatible and a switch is made to the newer SSD drive?

Hi:

That is a good question...

Below is the link to the Crucial SSD report for your model.

https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/HP-Compaq/spectre-x360-15-ap012dx

Crucial says that only SATA M.2 drives are supported.

Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.

Chapter 1 has conflicting info.  The caption shows...Single SATA M.2 SSD configuration as storage

But then goes on to indicate both SATA and PCIe (NVMe) M.2 drives are supported.

Chapter 3 has the SSD part numbers and if you google them they come up as NVMe drives.

I think it is too risky to install a NVMe drive.

I don't believe that HP had any M.2 NVMe slots in notebooks with 6th gen core processors.

Negative effects:  Only that the notebook will not recognize the NVMe drive if it is not supported.
