Confused about Memory Upgrade

Hi all,

I want to upgrade my laptop's memory, it currently has one 8 GB stick, that is running at 3200MHz

• CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 Mobile 5300U
• Graphics: Integrated Radeon Graphics

I need to upgrade the memory, from the manual I read that:

DDR4-2400 dual channel support (DDR4-3200 bridge to 2666, DDR4-2666 downgrade to DDR4-2400)

This is not immediately clear to me. But what I think this means is:

• If I put in another stick (same type) then I Slot #1 would downclock to 2666 (from 3200)
• Slot #2 will downgrade to 2400
• So, both will work at the common 2400?

I want to know if I'm right, and any details that I might be missing here.

Also, the manual states that the maximum supported memory is 16 GB. Is this because of the Motherboard? I really thought it'd at least support up to 32 GB 🤔 but alas!

Hi:

What model AMD processor does your notebook have?

The service manual you are looking at is probably outdated regarding the processors listed, so the memory speed info may not be applicable.

It has AMD Ryzen 3 5300U CPU.  How can I find accurate information about this notebook, if the manual is outdated.

You're very welcome.

Now that I know what model processor your notebook has, I can give you the answers to your questions.

The AMD Ryzen 3 5300U runs the memory at the full 3200 MHz.  It will not bridge to a slower speed.

Specs on the processor:

Connectivity

PCI Express® Version PCIe® 3.0

System Memory Type

DDR4 - Up to 3200MHz

You can do this to see how much memory your notebook can support:

1. In the search box, search for cmd and click Run as administrator.

This will open the command prompt.

2. Once command prompt is opened, type wmic memphysical get maxcapacityEx and hit enter.

There, it will show the maximum RAM capacity your PC's motherboard can support.

The capacity is shown as Kilobytes, so you have to convert it to Gigabytes by dividing the number provided in the report by 1,048,576.

I'm pretty sure you will find that it supports 2 x 16 GB of DDR4-3200 memory.

Also, the Crucial memory report for your notebook's model series indicates that it will support 2 x 16 GB of memory.

You would want this 16 GB chip.

So, the command output clearly states that the max memory is 32GB 😁

About the frequency, just to make sure (sorry if I'm pushing it 😅)

If I put two similar sticks in the two slots, will both work at 3200MHz? If I put, two 16GB sticks (same models) then will I have 32 GB memory at 32000MHz?

If you install 2 x 16 GB of DDR4-3200 memory, both chips will run at 3200 MHz.
