Hi everyone.

I bought a HP laptop almost 4 years ago, during three years, the laptop worked just fine, but recently, everytime i try to play any game, the CPU clocks down itself to 0'39Ghz, making playing almost impossible.

At first i thought it could be a temperature problem, so i cleaned the laptop and changed the thermical paste, but it solved nothing. I've updated the BIOS, and almost every driver in the laptop, i've checked energy settings and nothing changed and now i really don't know what to do anymore. I've tried disabling cool n quiet from the BIOS but i can't find the option in BIOS menu.

It only happens while gaming connected or in battery mode, while working CPU can go up to 100% usage a long time, but it doesn't clocks down.

The CPU is a Ryzen 7 4600H and the laptop model is an Hp pavilion gaming 15 - ec1011ns running in Windows 11, bought in Spain.

Thank you.

Hi @Rideros,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds frustrating to have your CPU throttle down like that. Here are some steps you can take to diagnose and potentially fix the issue.

  • Check Power Plan Settings: Ensure that your power plan settings are optimized for performance. Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options and select High Performance. Under advanced power settings, make sure that the Processor power management is set to 100% for both On battery and Plugged in.
  • Thermal Throttling: Even though you cleaned the laptop and changed the thermal paste, make sure that the cooling system is working properly. Overheating can still cause throttling if the cooling system isn’t efficient enough or if there’s dust buildup again.
  • Update or Rollback Drivers: Sometimes, new driver updates can cause issues. Check if rolling back the GPU or chipset drivers helps. Alternatively, ensure that all drivers, especially the GPU drivers, are up to date.
  • Check BIOS Settings: If you can’t find the Cool 'n' Quiet option, look for similar settings like AMD PowerNow!, CPU C-states, or Power Management settings in the BIOS. Ensure that these are set to performance-oriented modes rather than energy-saving modes.
  • Benchmark and Monitor: Use tools like HWMonitor or Core Temp to monitor your CPU temperature and clock speeds. This can help confirm if thermal throttling is indeed the issue. Also, check if your CPU is hitting any power limits.
  • Check for Background Processes: Sometimes, background applications can interfere with gaming performance. Use Task Manager to check if there are any background processes consuming significant resources.
  • Reinstall Windows: If the problem persists, consider performing a clean reinstall of Windows. This can help rule out any software conflicts or corrupted system files.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you for your answer.

I've already tried everything you say and nothing worked. The only thing i cannot do is disabling cool n quiet because in the BIOS menu i cant find any options about cpu power settings, but apart of that every other solution just doesnt work for me.

I've checked temps and there are no reason for thermal throttle to happen so im completely lost.
