Subject: Critical Bug in BIOS F.08 Content: USB Type-A Port Power Completely Locked (EC Chip Issue) on HP Envy x360 14-fa0038AU
Hello HP Support Team,
I am writing this to report a critical and severe firmware bug introduced in the latest BIOS Update Revision F.08 for my HP Envy x360 2-in-1 Laptop 14-fa0038AU (Serial Number: "Please do not include the serial number or any sensitive information") running Windows 11 Version 25H2.
While the BIOS F.08 update successfully resolved the thermal shutdown/fan profile issue, it has completely broke the power delivery of the USB Type-A port. The port has 0W output—it cannot even charge a mobile phone or power up a basic USB mouse.
As a technical user, I have performed exhaustive troubleshooting to isolate the issue, proving it is a pure hardware-level Embedded Controller (EC) firmware lock caused by your BIOS code:
  1. Windows & Drivers Re-installation: Completely wiped and clean-installed standalone AMD Chipset Drivers (GPIO/I2C power controllers) and Windows Optional AMD System Drivers (1.0.20.0).
  2. OS Independent Lock: The port remains completely dead even inside Safe Mode and during the boot phase, indicating a permanent power rail cut-off at the EC layer.
  3. ACPI & Registry Tweaks: Uninstalled and re-scanned USB Root Hubs and modified Registry DisableSelectiveSuspend to force power, but the motherboard refuses to pass current.
  4. BIOS Reset: Disabled Secure Boot and fully cleared/restored HP Factory Default Keys, but the EC NVRAM power layout remains frozen by the F.08 firmware.
This is a known issue being widely discussed on the HP Support Forum where users are experiencing dead ports after this specific update. Since rolling back the BIOS triggers the dangerous thermal shutdown issue again, we are stuck with broken hardware.
HP needs to escalate this to the firmware engineering team immediately to release an Emergency BIOS Fix (F.09 / Hotfix) to unlock the EC power rails for the USB-A ports. Looking forward to a swift technical response and an immediate firmware patch.

Hi @simmy_envy,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for providing the detailed information about your HP Envy x360 2-in-1 Laptop 14-fa0038AU and for taking the time to document all the troubleshooting you've already performed.

We understand that after installing BIOS F.08, the USB Type-A port stopped providing power, while the BIOS update resolved the thermal/fan-related issue you had been experiencing previously.

We also appreciate the thorough testing you've completed, including:

  • Reinstalling the AMD chipset and system drivers.
  • Checking the USB Type-A port outside normal Windows operation.
  • Reinstalling the USB controllers.
  • Testing USB power management changes.
  • Resetting the BIOS configuration.

Since you've already completed these steps and report that the USB Type-A port remains unpowered even during startup, we do not want you to repeat the same Windows or driver troubleshooting again.

We will forward the information you've provided regarding the USB Type-A behavior after BIOS F.08 to the relevant team for review.

Your findings regarding a possible Embedded Controller (EC) or BIOS-related cause are noted as part of the report. However, the exact root cause would need to be validated through the appropriate technical review. We therefore do not want to incorrectly confirm the EC firmware as the cause before that review has taken place.

Likewise, we cannot confirm or provide a release date for a BIOS F.09 or hotfix unless an update is officially made available for this product. If a BIOS update becomes available for your specific model, please use the BIOS version provided through the official HP support resources for the product.

In the meantime, we would not recommend further registry modifications, repeated BIOS changes, or attempting unofficial BIOS/EC firmware modifications, particularly since you've indicated that an earlier BIOS configuration/version resulted in thermal shutdown behavior.

One additional point: we noticed that the Serial Number was included in your Community post. For your privacy and security, please do not post in the future Serial Number, case numbers, email addresses, phone numbers, or other private information publicly. If such information is required for further support, it should only be provided through an appropriate private HP Support channel.

Thank you again for the exceptionally detailed report and for clearly documenting the behavior before and after the BIOS update. The information you've provided will help ensure the reported BIOS/USB behavior is presented clearly for the appropriate review.

Take care and have a good day.

I'm an HP Employee.
