Hi all,
Since about day 1 when the machine would start, on occasion, the fan would race and shut off and go nuts. Happened with whatever operating system or BIOS I was using. I have upgraded to 8.1 and the latest BIOS and the fan has settled down somebut can still hear it go up and down in rpms but it runs very slow at best soon after startup for the last year. I watch the temps and gets over 200F if I try to do a virus scan or something that takes resources. I cleaned out the openings best that I could and do not think it is a dust problem.....the fan never goes to higher speeds now except for the first 30 seconds the machine is on, no matter what the temps read. In fact I cannot even hardly hear it run but can feel a little heat coming out of the vent.
I am looking at changing out the fan or fan module for lack of a better solution. I have these 2 part numbers I found at HP parts when I supplied my serial number :
Thermo Module 682061-001 for about 46 dollars through HP
Thermo pad 682100-001 for about 66 dollars through HP
OK, which one is the complete fan assembly ? I assume the pad but have to make sure it will have the fan with it. I assume the 682061-001 is just the fan, correct ?
When I call up these numbers at aftermarket sites it shows the complete unit for both numbers and HP doesn't show any photos of what is what.
Also, is there any way to force the fan on or control it in setup? I don't see any way but some of you experts are much more clever than I am.
One more question...On the HP parts surfer if I "add to cart" and want to check out , it gives no pricing and I can't buy anything except 1 time I got there and I cannot get back to that screen.. How the heck do you purchase anything from the HP parts store ? I included my country of origin, the US ...Pleas try it with these numbers and see what you get..
Thanks a bunch !!

Hi and thanks for the reply. I know the parts I need, Intel processor. I typed in
my seriel number to find them. Below are copies of the manual. 682061-001 is 48
dollars according to HP parts. I am assuming this is everything I need.
From the manual:
"Fan/heat sink assembly
NOTE: The fan/heat sink assembly spare part kit includes replacement thermal
material.
Description Spare part number
For use only on computer models equipped with an Intel processor and a graphics
subsystem with
discrete memory
682061-001 "
Now, what is 682100-001 ? it is $66.75 Thermal pad it says. Here is a copy of
the description in the manual :
"Replacement
thermal material is also available in the Thermal Material Kit, spare part number
682100-001 (for use on computer models
equipped with an Intel processor)."
Why would I need the more expensive 682100-001 if 682061-001 is all I need.? It
contains the fan, heat sink and paste, correct ?
Thanks !

I did that...used my seriel number and model number...I have the intel processor and both parts came up for my build...I am attaching photos but they are not showing up for some reason. I need to know which one of the 2 will get me by.
