CD/DVD drive failed out of the blue... can open drawer with a needle but computer no longer seems to recognize that I have a CD/DVD drive... did some online checking and after checking that the driver was current (it was), most popular advice seemed to be delete the driver, reset and it should reinstall but it didn't... there's now no listing on device manager for DVD/CD.
Got error 45 that the hardware was not connected?
Any ideas to fix at some reasonable cost/effort?

Need exact model number but for most recent models the DVD drive is very easily removeable and replaceable. Remove a single screw, slide it out and put a new one in. Replacement DVD drives have plummeted in cost as nobody really wants or uses them any more. Sometimes as little as $20US and rarely more than $40US for a DVD burner. Blu-Ray a little higher. Post back with your exact model number and the country where you live and we can walk you through replacement. Of course if you are under warranty no need to spend anything.

Thanks a lot, that did the trick...
One follow-up: is there a good (preferably free) DVD player for Windows 10 that works well? The VLC and CyberLink DVD players I have now are prone to crash or only play a DVD-R in a small window even when you try full-screen.
