DVD error CD burner dirty

Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Bought a HP Pavilion 17" notebook last Xmas.  I have been coping DVDs to Hard drive since then (proably over 1000 to date).  The DVDRW has been intermitent and have been using external DVD RW.  Notebook DVD burner returned an error today saying "CD burner dirty" and would not read DVD.  Is there a solution to clean it easily or should I purchase another internal DVD unit?  Thanks
