HP Spectre x360
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Even with my laptop plugged in, none of my USB ports continue charging my devices once the display turns off. I've been casually researching this for 2.5 years, ever since I got the laptop, but I never have any luck and eventually just give up until the next time it starts annoying me again. Everything I've ever read on the topic has been related to the power options, power plans, etc., and I've looked through all of these settings and made the recommended adjustments but nothing ever fixes this problem. It seems impossible to believe that the ports can't continue powering devices even if the laptop display is off.

Change the Power Settings from 30 minutes to whatever time it takes for your USB-connected device to get a full charge.

Welcome to HP Support Forums. 🙂 I came across your post and would like to help.

I understand that you have an HP Spectre x360 series laptop. I read that the devices seize to charge via USB once the display turns off. I appreciate the steps you have performed and have certainly done a good job.

I did some research and found the following information:

  • Open the device manager.
  • You will see a few devices called ‘USB Root Hub’. Click on each one and go to its properties.
  • In the Properties window for each USB Root Hub, go to the Power Management tab and uncheck the ‘Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power’ option.

Once you do this for all USB Root Hub devices, you will be able to continue charging your phone even if you close your laptop lid.

I sincerely hope this fixes the issue. However, if you need further assistance then please let me know the exact product model no. This link will help you to find the model no: http://hp.care/2bygf7l.

Keep me posted. Cheers! 🙂

I only had one instance of 'USB Root Hub' and I unchecked the box as you instructed. This did not resolve the issue. The product number isr: L0Q51UA#ABA

Thank you for joining HP Forums.

I'll be glad to help you 🙂

I understand that you are unable to charge your devices through your Notebook USB ports once the Notebook display turns off.

I see that you have already tried changing the power settings for the USB Hub as instructed by my colleague.

Please update the Bios from here AMD Drivers and Support | AMD and let me know if that helps.

Thank you. 🙂

In Windows, Power Management has two steps:

1. After a short time, usually 10 minutes, dim the display, to reduce its power consumption.

Touching the keyboard, or wiggling the mouse, will "undim" the display.

2. After a while, usually 30 minutes, put the computer to "sleep".

So, between '10' and '30' minutes, your computer should still be charging your device(s).  Correct?
