Touchpads make my life extremely difficult. How do you disable the touchpad on this computer?

I've already tried to research the answer. I do NOT have a "Device Settings" tab in the "Mouse" option in the Control Panel. I've gone to the Device Manager and uninstalled Synaptics Touchpad, restarted, and it had reinstalled itself. Tried several times, every time I restart, it reppears in the list and the touchpad remains functional.

I can't stand this. This computer is brand new, and I love it otherwise, but this is actually a make or break issue with me. It's causing me to lose a lot of information when I type because of slightly brushing it with my hands.

Hi,

That's fine.

Try downloading and installing the latest version listed for your notebook on the following link.

http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp68001-68500/sp68122.exe

If this installs Ok, reboot and check if the disable option is available via Device Manager.

If it installs Ok, but the Disable option is still greyed out, open windows Control Panel and in the top right, next to View by: select 'Large Icons'.  From the new layout, select Mouse and then select the ClickPad Settings tab - look for a disable option here similar to the image below.

Hi,

If the Synaptics driver is still installed ( and continually reinstalls when removed ), it may be easier to just disable the device, but leave the driver installed - you can do this as follows.

Hold down the Windows key and press R.

Into the Run box type devmgmt.msc and hit enter.

Expand 'Mice and other pointing devices' then right click the Synaptics entry, select Properties, click on the Driver tab and then click on the Disable button.

The "Disable" button is greyed out in the Driver tab.

Hi,

The usual reason for the disable button to be greyed out is if the generic Windows touchpad driver is currently loaded.  To corect this, just reinstall the Synaptics driver, reboot and see if the option is now selectable.

Downloaded driver from Synaptics website, it told me that the driver I was running now was the newest version and to uninstall it to install the older version.

Tried again to uninstall the driver so I could reinstall this one, but once again it comes right back after uninstalling and restarting.

It won't let me install the older driver until this one is uninstalled. It also doesn't show up as a program in the list to uninstal a program, I'm trying to uninstall using the options under Properties in the Device Manager window.

Is there any way for me to locate the Windows driver that is interfering with disabling this?

Hi,

Most notebook manufacturers ( including HP ) customise the pointing device driver to some extent so try using Recovery Manager to reinstall your original Synaptics driver - the procedure for using recovery manager to reinstall Software and Drivers is detailed in the document on the link below.

Recovery Manager - Windows 8.

If this completes, restart the notebook and then see if the 'Disable' option is now available.

My HP Support Assistant looks different than the screenshots in the linked page shows.

I went to "Software and Drivers Installed" on my Support Assistant, and chose "Bundled Software Troubleshooting" and selected Non-HP software, chose Windows 8, and nothing related to Synaptics was listed (also chose HP Software just in case, Synaptics is also not there). I could find the Synaptics driver listed under "Other Software" on the "Software and Drivers Installed" tab, but I couldn't do anything with it (no options).

Hi,

In that case, can you post back with the following details.

1.  The full Model No. and Product No. of your m7 series notebook - holding down the fn key and pressing esc will usually display this information, otherwise see Here

2.  On the Drivers tab for the pointing device, is Synaptics still listed as the Driver Provider?  If it is, what is the Driver version?

Product name:HP ENVY m7 Notebook PC

There is not a Model Number, but there is a Serial Number. Do you need the Serial Number?

Synaptics is the Driver Provider of the TouchPad. The Driver Version is 15.3.29.0
