Hey,

 

I know it's kinda of an old laptop but I still use it for simple stuff around the office, text processing and stuff like that.

 

I've been tinkering with the ideia to replace the current i3-2310M with something more powerfull, but I really can't seem to make sense of the information available in forums and etc.

 

My guess is that this is possible, given I use another sandy bridge processor, with the same socket and number of cores/threads.

 

I've added RAM, replaced the drive with an SSD and replaced the CD caddy with a Drive Caddy for extra storage. Now it started lagging and I think it's the processor craping out. Did some stress tests and the CPU did not do ok.

 

The thing is that all SandyBridge i5 processors, for example, have TurboBoost. Sandybridge i3's don't have TurboBoost. Will it work on my motherboard? Because matching sockets, TDP and cores is easy, but I'm not sure the chipset will work with the CPU, especially considering TurboBoost.

 

I guess my questions are:

 

 - Can I replace the i3 for any of the Sandybridge 35W TDP, dual core i5's in this motherboard?

 - If not, is there a compatible i5 motherboard with dedicated graphics for the dv6-6000 series?

HI,

According to your service manual there is only one type of motherboard for intel processors for your PC. (Actually three types but that has to do with graphics and graphics subsystem). So there should be no problem with the processor and the motherboard will provide the extra wattage without any problem.

 

The i7-2820QM comes in two packages and is available for two socket types as you wrote rPGA988B and BGA 1224. We can see this in the specification of the processor:

You need the one for PGA988 socket.

Intel Core i7-2630QM 2.00-GHz (SC turbo up to 2.90-GHz) processor (6.0-MB L3 cache, quad core, 45 W)

Intel Core i7-2620M 2.70-GHz (SC turbo up to 3.40-GHz) processor (4.0-MB L3 cache, dual core, 35 W)

Intel Core i5-2540M 2.60-GHz (SC turbo up to 3.30-GHz) processor (3.0-MB L3 cache, dual core, 35 W)

Intel Core i5-2520M 2.50-GHz (SC turbo up to 3.20-GHz) processor (3.0-MB L3 cache, dual core, 35 W)

 Intel Core i5-2430M 2.40-GHz (SC turbo up to 3.00-GHz) processor (3.0-MB L3 cache, dual core, 35 W)

Intel Core i5-2410M 2.30-GHz (SC turbo up to 2.90-GHz) processor (3.0-MB L3 cache, dual core, 35 W

 

These are compatible in your system and the different Intel motherboards are for the graphics  card and different dedicated RAM configurations

So just to make this clear for me and basically just order the processor right now, there is no problem with the diferent TDP and number of cores in processors?

 

If so there is a lot of information around the forum that is just misleading!

And another small thing, what's the diference between rPGA988B and BGA1224 and BGA1023?

 

The i7-2820QM 2.30-GHz appears with rPGA988B and BGA1224 options and I can't tell wich one is right.
