HP ENVY x360 - 15-aq055na (ENERGY STAR)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I just need to know if the M.2 drive supports NVMe, or only SATA. I'm having real trouble finding any answers. It was shipped with a SATA drive, but that doesn't mean it does not support NVMe.

I think you are mixing it up.

M.2 SSD products do not support PCIe NVMe or SATA.

They are SATA or  PCIe NVMe format and are either supported by the chipset and BIOS of a laptop or PC or they are not.

I think you are asking what type of M.2 drive does your laptop have support for.

I looked at the specifications document and see why you would perhaps be confused. It does not specify which type is supported.

Your laptop has support for PCIe NVMe Gen 4 and SATA-3 M.2 2280 SSD products.

Hi, @Critcho

Unless chapter 1, page 3 of your notebook's service manual is incorrect, your notebook's M.2 slot only supports SATA M.2 SSD's, not NVMe.

Thanks Paul. I had tired to get the service manual from my product support page, but it was 404.

You're very welcome.

The link I posted worked for you, correct?

If not, I have attached the manual pdf below.

Hmm.  I am not so sure about that manual, but I do see that the processor is Skylake 7th Gen, so SATA should be the M.2 type.

Update:

However, an article published by Intel about the 7th Gen processors states that the processor series that yours comes from has support for PCIe Gen 3 NVMe.

"I/O in U & Y series 7th Gen Intel® Core™ processors offers Gen 3 PCIe* support, supporting higher data transfer rates of 8 GT/s versus 5 GT/s with PCIe Gen 2. The latest Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) supports NVMe* PCIe x4 Solid State Drives and is capable of utilizing Gen 3 PCIe speed."

It is unfortunate the HP did not provide information on your specific laptop and instead made us have to make inferences about its capabilities.

I did ask our internal sources where the manual that is specific to your laptop model series is.

Hi!

I'm not so sure about it either Erico (6th gen by the way -typo).

Paul, I think it does support PCIe:

@TzortzisG

Intel states that thei7-6560U processor is 7th Gen, so no typo.
