OMEN by HP Laptop PC - 17-w010ur (ENERGY STAR)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

This laptop has 16 GB RAM (2*8), I'd like to upgrade it to 32 GB (2*16), but I'm not sure if it supports it. What I could find on the internet is controversial:

  • Crucial gives controversial information: it says that maximum memory is 32 GB, but suggests only 8 GB SODIMMs as compatible memory
  • MrMemory says it's 16 GB max
  • It seems I've seen somewhere else that it's 32 GB max (don't remember exactly)

What's the right answer, and where could I get it?

Usually notebooks with the Intel 'HQ' processors will support 32 GB of memory.

You can run this command to confirm that to be true:

1. In the search box, search for cmd and click Run as administrator.

This will open the command prompt.

2. Once command prompt is opened, type wmic memphysical get maxcapacityEx and press the enter key.

There, it will show the maximum RAM capacity your PC's motherboard can support.

The capacity is shown as Kilobytes, so you have to convert it to Gigabytes by dividing the number provided in the report by 1,048,576.

The service manual indicates the max memory is 2 x 8 GB.

Thank you! This way gives 33554432, which is 32 GB. Hope it can be trusted 🙂

You're very welcome.

You should be fine running 2 x 16 GB of the following memory specs:

DDR4-2400 CL17 2Rx8

DDR4-2666 CL19 2Rx8

DDR4-3200 CL22 2Rx8

The memory will all run at a max speed of 2133 MHz because that is as fast as your notebook's processor can run the memory at.

Thank you! I'm buying a pair of Crucial 16GB DDR4-3200, and ChatGPT says they can be either 2Rx8 or 1Rx8.
Is it going to be a problem if it's 1Rx8?

HP Recommended

You're very welcome.

I'm not 100% sure.

1Rx8 should work though.

1Rx16 may not.

Hi!

Paul, the OMEN 17-w010ur with the 6th gen Intel HQ cpu will not be able to work with anything other than 2Rx8 16GB modules. The reason is that this CPU gen is quite old and single rank 16GB modules were not available at the time. Some gaming 1Rx8 16GB modules emerged later on, but of course these were not compatible. HP's designers just didn't provide "forward" compatibility for single rank 16GB modules. This is why Crucial only offers the old 2400 8GB modules for this model, even though you can see at the top of the page that Crucial admits max RAM is 32GB.

Had the same problem with 7th gen Probooks that housed the i7-7820HQ CPU (Z2W58EA). This is why Crucial, for these laptops, again offers 8GB modules yet mentions 32GB is the max RAM limit.... On the other hand, Kingston has 2Rx8 16GB modules available for this model, and these are the kind of modules _meph_ needs to find for the Omen. This is the current dual-rank 16GB module Crucial sells nowadays which will work correctly, it is the equivalent to the Kingston modules seen above: CT16G4SFD824A. But as you mentioned above, a dual-rank module of ANY speed will work fine. Single-rank unfortunately will not......

I shouldn't have second-guessed myself and stuck to my guns about the 2Rx8 memory spec.

Given the above information, see if you can get this memory, where you don't have to guess what specification you are going to end up with.

Thank you both very much!
Unfortunately, I already ordered the Crucial memory (pair of 16GB modules), and it isn't written on the shop's page whether it's 1R or 2R. I think I'll be able to return it if I can see that it's 1R.
Can it be seen visually, without inserting the memory into the laptop, if it's 1R or 2R? Is it correct that 1Rx8 has 64/8*1=8 chips on the module and 2Rx8 has 64/8*2=16 chips?

You're very welcome.

Hopefully it will be on the label like it is on the Timetec memory.

If not, you will have to try it and see what happens.

I would recommend loosely reassembling your notebook after you install the memory until you are sure one way or the other as to what to do next.
