dq1030tu
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I was so happy when I received my new laptop (dq1030tu) that orders online, I smelled the plastic, that was new! I open the lid, press power button, login my Microsoft account, set my own PIN, had my finger press several times on that small little square. Now I can use my laptop, I installed The Sims 4, had fun for a while, ah, new update available.

Windows installed some update for me, and the HP assistant installed new BIOS update and required restart. I clicked restart button, and waited the laptop finish the BIOS update. Yay, I am back to my login, but the fingerprint sensor not working. There is no biometrics device found in Device Manager, there is no uninstall solution, reinstalling from new driver doesn't make the device appear in Device Manager.

Following methods also tried:

Recover to stock firmware > not working

Cleared TPM > not working

Kindly help. Thanks.

This is carbon copy of what happened to me, but on 15s-fq1907nz.

@Budul Greetings from the HP Community!

If you haven't done it yet, please update the BIOS using the HP Support assistant: click here for details,

Once done, restart the device and check if it works, if it does not, try the below steps:

  1. Open the Settings app. You can do that quickly by using Windows Key + I shortcut.
  2. Settings app will now appear. Navigate to the Apps section.
  3. Locate the fingerprint reader software on the list and select it. Now click the Uninstall button.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the uninstallation process.

Update the drivers from the HP website,

And if that didn't help, create a new user account and check if that works,

Let me know how that pans out,

@Budul If the issue occurred after the automatic BIOS updates, try the below updates:

Click here to perform a harder reset on your device

If the issue persists, after the above steps, try the below:

  1. Turn off the notebook.

  2. Plug the notebook into a power source using the power adapter.

  3. With the notebook off, press and hold the Windows logo key  and the B key at the same time.

       NOTE:

On some notebook models, it might be necessary to press and hold the Windows logo key  and the V key.

  4. While pressing those keys, press and hold the Power button on the computer for 2 to 3 seconds, and then release the Power button but continue to hold the Windows logo key  and the B or V key until the HP BIOS update screen displays or you hear a beeping sound (usually 8 beeps).

The HP BIOS Update screen displays, and the BIOS update begins automatically. This might take several minutes, and you might hear additional beeping sounds.

    • If the HP BIOS Update screen does not display, repeat the previous steps. If the issue persists after repeating the steps, skip to the next step to Download a replacement BIOS file.

    • If the Power light turns off, the notebook has turned off because the Power button was held too long. Repeat the previous steps, making sure to hold the Power button for 2 to 3 seconds only.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE STEPS AND INSTRUCTIONS.

(By the end of this article all the issues should be resolved)

Hi Riddle_Decipher,

thanks for a hint.

i went thru BIOS recovery and BIOS CMOS reset as well.

But this didn't change anything.

Still no biometrics under Device manager.

@yapmeo: your result, please?

Are you sure that notebook models in question with mentioned BIOS version (F.07 Rev.A) can still use fingerprint scanner?

I mean, Device manager shows biometrics section?

What about some BIOS section (some hidden menu) which would show if biometrics are turned ON/OFF?

Any other idea?

Cheers!

@Budul If the fingerprint reader had been working but isn't since an update, this is clearly a windows issue,

That said, I looked around and since there are no fixes or patches available yet, to resolve such issues, I suggest you backup all personal data and perform a system reset to resolve the issue: click here for steps.

Also the issue could be a result of an incorrect update, so you could try windows reset followed by updating the same again as that should resolve the issue, if that doesn't happen, you may need to temporarily disable windows updates until there's a fix for this from Microsoft.

Hi @Budul and @all,

I reverted BIOS back to F.04 and the ELAN fingerprint device still did NOT appear in Device Manager on my Windows (1909). I was not able to reset back to stock using recovery as I deleted all partition inside this SSD included the recovery partition.

However, it seems the device maybe detected but installed with a "USB Composite Device" driver (kindly refer to attached images), and I was not able to manually install the elan driver (WbfUsbDriver.inf) it shows error, kindly correct me if I am wrong...

Hi guys,

checked again few things:

1) inf file of latest ELAN Fingerprint driver (WbfUsbDriver.inf) ->

image.png

It clearly looks for device with this VID&PID: %DeviceName% = Biometric_Install, USB\VID_04F3&PID_0C00

BUT there is NO such USB device with VID_04F3&PID_0C00 on my machine at all (not anymore).

Just the same one (Composite USB) mentioned by @yapmeo: VID_04F3&PID_0910

2) In Event Viewer one can see following:

image.png

Which comes from windows update?

I understand it like: device with VID_04F3&PID_0C00 was there before update, but on the same location (see Location Path) there is VID_04F3&PID_0910 now.
How could it be? One device is gone, replaced/masked by another one?

If you put "VID_04F3&PID_0C00" to Google, you get some hits on ELAN Fingerprint driver.

On "VID_04F3&PID_0910" you get nothing -> what is this one??

So what is going on here?

What BIOS version is responsible for this and why?

BTW, there is new BIOS F.09 Rev.A available now.
But brings NO change in this case for me.

Could we try with older BIOS?

There are just 04 and 07 available for download... but i'm not sure which one was there before update.

03??
